NEW FIXED HEADLIGHT CONVERSION IDEA?

This had been a real interesting thread to follow.... I've learned a lot more than i've ever bargained for on headlight conversions. I personally am torn about which way to go. I like the popups but on the other hand, i think they would look really cool stationary and there could be a chance for even better lighting. I have to agree with the comment someone made about the stock OEM lights are pretty awesome.. especially for 1992 technology. The only issue is the story ends without an ending.

I'd love to see what the final outcome has been on the project. Any idea on ETA for completion. I also have a drivers side headlight i'm getting ready to replace. Took out a deer's head with it. Guess i'm really lucky thats all that got damaged. Anyway, i'm in for the conversion if its done right.
Not to bring this up again, but I happend upon another vendor that offers this conversion, but at a price of $1,995. Click on the conversions button, http://www.autotechplus.com/
Looks completely wrong. Looks like a hammered down version of the 911. The front fender lines are a key style feature of this car. Unless the lights fit within the existing cavity without having to redo the fenders it just makes no sense. I'm not a big fan of the frog eyes, and since I don't trust anyone to actually see me in the daytime I always run with lights on. In the 68 I use the fog lights in the day so that the fender lines are not interrupted by the lights.

Hmm... I don't know. I wonder if this one could grow on me. I like it better than stuffing 993 light into a stock 968 fender, and having the lights stick up, but somehow Arktech's conversion looks better. I can't quite put my finger on what they did differently, but Arktech somehow more gracefully integrated the 993's headlight into the 968's fender, without having the fender (or the light) bulge up as noticeably as autotechplus's job.

Since these guys seem to have the know-how to modify the 968's fenders, maybe they could copy Arktech's solution, and we'd finally have something available that most would agree is a good way to go on this.

that's easy - they changed the profile of the fender, and the mounting location of the light - not so tough to do when you make an entirely new fender out of fiberglass or carbon, but a lot tougher when you are working with steel

the problem with the replacement fender is that you lose front end rigidity, unless you add stiffeners back in there to make up for it - that's the nature of the beast though on a unibody car like ours

not a simple solution to be sure

I like my lights! I'll take this opportunity for a shameless plug. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I'ts funny, I go to a lot of PCA events, and no one has ever noticed that the lights have been changed, but I seem to get double the compliments on the car as a whole??? That tells me that they look good and they look like they belong!

I'd take them, Badberry. In comparison to the pop-ups, I think they're a world of improvement.

Badberry, witch partnumber have you used to do this conversion?

Also was it nescessary to modify the fenders or the space behind it?

I'm interested in detailed photos. very close to see how much they pop out the fender.

thanks.

admittedly i am nitpicky that way - body gasket gaps, hood gaps, and things like that catch my eye too

I will try to post some pictures, if I can't, a search will turn up a good close-up of another red car that had this done. Just the opening is reshaped but the back of the 993 light gets trimmed a little, and they are attached by a bracket and zip-ties. I don't know the part # but the 993 lights do have a left and a right side. I got mine used from a a fellow 968Forums member.
I love Zoran's car and always love it when he posts pictures. If I am ever down under I will be asking for a ride even if I have to fly across all of Australia to get there. I love the coupe in white and in race trim even more so.
Mark, if you ever end up in Australia make sure you get in touch with me so I can take you up for some test drives around places or maybe even a race track. which colour do you think looks better(faster).

whoever is intrested in this h.l. conversion, it costs less then $500 in second hand parts and it will get 10kg of the car. Trade person should take about 4 days to complete. To me looks OK, however it has lost the original look of 968 car.

I agree that it has "lost the original look" - at least with respect to the headlights. However, since I'm not a fan of the headlights (other than when they are not in use), it's a sacrifice I'm quite willing to make.

The bronze orange color looks great...and faster; sort of like a meteor streaking by!

Not normally a fan of orange (even coppery orange) but it looks good with the black contrasts. I think the whit is till my favorite base but it does need some more colors added to it for some flair.

I think the headlight conversion looks fine and for an endurance racer makes a lot of sense. I don't mind the pop ups on a street car.

Please post the part numbers required....the lights look awesome! I would have to imagine the stock lights could be re-installed if the owner so wished...that said 500 bucks for some fun is cheap.

Thanks for the post.

And the car looks bad-a$$...nice work!

Thanks for your comments guy's. Mark, Chriss, Pazzer, Anchorman, Brian... The orange (Lamborghini orange) is a bright orange in a sunny light and does change to other shades as outside lighting changes. It was over cast when I took the photos.

As for HL, I am happy with the end result and I would not go back even if I could. In saying that, you could put it all back, but be ready to put lots of labour time into it as there is lots of parts that get taken out.

Here are some more photos. I will soon take some shots when it is sunny so you guy's can see the difference.

Radical difference in the color based on lighting. Looks good in either light.
