Need A windshield
#1

Does anyone know a source for a new windshield...coupe w/out antenna?

Also, i was looking at the 86 and newer oem #s for windshields and they are all the same except the final 2 numbers (.08,.09,.10,.11,.12,..etc) I figure these relate to upper tinting and internal antenna...but shape seems the same. Does anyone know for sure?

no, but i made an interesting discovery not long ago

we have all heard that all the windshields come with antennae

we have all heard that all the cab winsheields are 60mm shorter than the hatchback ones (true)

i measured and examined carefully

indeed the cab windshields are 60mm shorter, and that material was taken from the top

i understand the logic of making universal parts with options that are used in one model, but not in the next

one would assume, therefore, that the antenna was then at a position so that the glass would be the only thing changed - by that i mean that there would be a certain amount above the hatchback antenna, and then 60mm more above the cab antenna - this would allow for identical molds and tooling and such

NO!!!!!

they went out of their way to make a hatchback windshield with an antenna for a car which never came with one

just plain dumb

I bought a new windshield for my coupe last year from Porsche.

I got one that had an antenna. I was pissed to say the least.

My girlfriends best friend is a GM for a Porsche dealer, and he assured me (at the time) this was the only one available.

You could try safelite or aftermarket.

or you could take advantage of it, remove the roof antenna, and connect to the new one

That would leave a hole that needs to be filled on the roof panel. Which than would require paint work.

After a year with my new glass, I do not even see the antenna anymore. But I know it is there and it bugs me sometimes. It was really annoying when I first had it installed.

If I could install a CB radio in a suitable manner, I'd do it in a heartbeat - and maybe I could be part of a (non-existent?) movement to bring back these wonderful devices. Nothing has replaced the real-time traffic and Smokey information - plus the general banter. 10-4.

Hey smokie, your fan club from Ohio at Hershey all had CB's on their 944s...

Now, if you could just come up with a good handle...LOL

It is my understanding that the 944 windshield is also different.

I think the 968 windshield is longer vertically.

IIRC Pete, mentioned that a real good glass installer could make it work, but I am not sure.

Another option is a dismantler.

I have found a couple of used windshields but no one wants to ship them because of breakage. If anyone lives in the Phoenix area and would be interested in helping me obtain a windshield, please PM me or respond to this post.

All I would ask is that you pick up the windshield from the dismantler's yard, check it for cracks, and load it into a crate which I will supply to whatever address you give to me. I use a very responsible shipping company which does not stack or smash their crates. I will even send the packing material. Of course, this will require time and effort on your part and maybe we can work out some kind of riembursement.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested.

THANKS!!

PS: I actually already bought the windshield, just need help shipping it

i am NOT a fan of dismantler windshields - this is because they still have to be installed, and none of the installers i have ever come across will warranty the used glass against breakage, regardless of inspection - that means, if they break it, you bought it - having gone that way, and lost, i'm not going back

last time i bought a windshield, it was $400 to my door from sunset

Also the used glass will more than likely have pitting and inclusions.

If you order from sunset more than likely you will end up with an antenna. Try doing a search or in look in the downloadable pet for the right part number so you can confirm as to what glass is availble. Perhap they had a new batch of antannaless windshields made?

No, it's a brand new windshield...apparently the 'last one' in the USA (but everyone says that until the next batch is made)...no antenna..for 968 coupe. Just happens to be through a dismantler who has access to a warehouse of parts. price a little over 400 but no shipping included. I called everyone this week and no one, not even my local porsche dealer and his warehouse in Atlanta, had one.

I don't mind spending a extra for shipping. I have a friend in Phoenix, just can't get in touch with him at the moment. That's why I was wondering if any other members live there and can help me out...
