A Pillar Cover Replacment
#1

Got a pair of A pillar covers on ebay from an 89 944. They looked close so I figured what the heck. My car spent a number of years in Tx and Az and the interior plastics show it. here is a pic of the PSide - note the warp. They look worse in person.

Removed the existing covers - 3 screws and gentle twisting pressure. Very simple.

Found a wire under each cover. DSide was thin and not connected to anything far as I could tell. PSide was thicker and disappeared into the dash. "Made in USA" printed on the wire. Any ideas what that is/was?

Installation was also easy. At first we tried to torque it in place but no go. So I warmed it up in the Sun for 20 minutes - nope. Finally removed the visor one side at a time (no need to remove the entire piece) and the cover went in easy.

Shine her up and good as new.

Brian I noted that the covers I removed had an odd cut to them, where you noticed that yours and mine was cutting the door trim. Here is a pic side by side. You can see the difference (968 on left, 944 on right). The 944 cover fits better - plenty of clearance without any nasty gap. Who knows?

glad to hear you were able to find/identify parts that fit - with clearance. I still haven't got the courage to take a heat gun to mine and attempt to reshape the warpage for fear of making them worse.

The DS wire might have been for a hands free phone.

My hardwired radar detector runs through my A-pillar cover. You could have remnants of one from the PO.

I had pretty good success straightening my warped covers with a heat gun but I was very careful and took my time.

I also replaced my windscreen frame linings recently, although mine weren't as warped as yours. I noted the Porsche part number in the 88 944 catalog is the same as as that for 968s (944 555 054 00). The part for earlier 944s (85 catalog) is different (477 867 554 A). Perhaps that explains why yours looks different, ie from an older 944.
I also found that the late 944/968 lining is metal covered with foam and vinyl, which should make it hard to warp. In mine the metal was bent perhaps by during a careless windscreen replacement?
