under engine tray/ lower cover under front bumper
#1

Has anyone replaced this: under engine tray/ lower cover under front bumper?

What is the cost? Is it the same part for 968 and 944 S2 or 944 turbo?

Where is the best source to purchase it?

txs

I think it's around $325. My local Porsche dealer could get it (mine's pretty banged up - I did the dreaded proof-that-I'm-a-total-idiot crunch into the parking space barrier maneuver). Not sure if it's the same part as for a 944.

No, the 968 undertrays are different from the 944 Series. Try Sunset Porsche in Oregon for a good price. www.sunsetimports.com Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

It was an uneven parking space, and I went into it at an angle. Anyways, I ended up ripping off one side of the bumper cover as result. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Reading that story hurt my stomach.

I bought my 968 with no batwing. It's OK - more incentive to get a splitter.

You should really replace the "batwing" piece that goes under the bumper. It protects your oil cooler from road debris. I left mine off for a while and hit a piece of metal on the Interstate and tore a hole in the oil cooler. No engine damage, but I had to buy a new oil cooler, none of the local radiator shops could repair the damage. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

still need the front apron, even if you have a splitter - the idea is to close off the front of the radiator and create the high pressure zone there

you really need the intermediate pan too

I just purchased a new batwing and all the mounting hardware from Sunset. My car was missing the batwing when I bought it and, after much delay, I finally got around to ordering the piece. Service at Sunset was great and the cost IIRC was around $325.

I, too, had to replace the batwing earlier this ear. Question though: my 93 has the "third" pan on it, which is a metal pan that is mounted to the rear of the under engine plastic pan. This pan does not seem to be mounted on all cars. Does anyone know its purpose (other than to collect oil drips off the engine). It's not apparent just what it protects. And, other than keeping the car original....do I relly need it?

Apparently it helps further manage the airflow under the car, tbe purpose being to continue the job of the front two pans in pulling air through the radiator and out the bottom of the car. Most seem to not have this third pan (I don't even have the middle one), so I'm not sure how critical it actually is, but it can't hurt to have it.

there is a noticeable difference in both cooling and downforce - the negative pressure generated is significant - it has been enough to spur on a new project of completing the pan all the way to the transaxle

Dont forget E-Bay when looking for these pans. My car came missing all three and I was able to find all of them for less that $400 at two sellers. Even bought a bag of fasteners from one fellow parting out his car. And another reason for using that third pan is that it has what appears to be heat shields for the rear suspension bushing.

The "3rd" pan is missing because jackass mechanics take it off, and leave it off. Miraculously, my mom's 968 had both pans and the batwing. I couldn't believe this, because the car was obsessively maintained at the local dealership, and dealers are notorious for doing jackass things.

I think the best part of having that 3rd metal pan is that it shields the caster blocks from fluid leaks. It is very common for PS fluid to leak onto the passenger side caster block, which causes it to deteriorate and fail.

Flash, I though splitters go in place of batwings. I.e. a splitter is basically a batwing that sticks out in the front. I agree the car needs to have this cover under the radiator, for cooling effects, shielding effects, and aerodynamic effects.

no - the porsche motorsport splitter sandwiches the front apron between it and the bumper cover

i believe the tech art unit replaces the front apron, but it has been so long since i saw it siting in the box, that i am not sure anymore

mine does replace the front apron though, but it is not made for a 968 - it has been modified to fit the 968

Sorry for resurrecting a ten year old thread, but I was under my car for an oil change yesterday and noticed that I've lost several bits of hardware securing both the plastic and aluminum pans underneath my engine. (The hardware securing my GRP splitter is all still firmly in place, thanks Flash, you did a great job on that piece.). I've searched all my usual online sources and none of them list any of these bits or their hardware. Based on the OP, I'll call Sunset tomorrow but does anyone else know of a source? I know it's all pretty much generic stuff, but I'd rather not resort to Ace Hardware unless absolutely necessary.

In related news, after dancing around the 75,000 mile barrier, and putting about $5K into my cab over the last couple of year (new suspension, top, clutch) and in consideration of what's out there to replace it, I've decided against selling it. I'll rethink again at 99,000, at which point it should still command top dollar.

In light of that I decided I've had it with pulling all those pans for an oil change and I ordered a quick valve and 90° elbow for it. It's going to require a little trimming on the alu pan for clearance, but after the next time I'll never have to pull them again. I can flip a lever and let it drain while I'm cleaning up the oil that spilled from the stupid horizontally mounted oil filter! Big Grin

And now that I'm retired and in a fixed income, I suppose I should look into a belt tension tool and learn how to do the belts. I did all the ancillaries last time (water pump, pulleys, and tensioner) so they should be good to go for a bit.

I don't need either, just the hardware to fasten them. From what I remember from the last time I had it all off, it's a variety of 6 or 8 mm hex bolts and sheet metal screws/speed clips

This might help, I bought one a few years ago.  It had lots that I needed, can't remember if it had each and every last piece.
