While I have the front bumper off...
#1

I removed my front bumper to replace a cracked grille and replace the beat piping.  Didn't notice til i removed the bumper that it has three small tears all around the tow hook trim and all about an inch in length. The picture below shows two of the tears, the third is above the tow hook trim, with the same "repair" done by a previous owner. Is this something that needs an immediate proper repair, or would it be ok to put back as is until i'm ready to do a respray in a couple of years? I'm a little leery of scraping off the current repair and doing my own because its just as likely i make a bigger mess as it is that i make it stronger.

While the bumper is off anyway, i was thinking of installing an escort sr7 radar detector. I know there are newer and better, but its a spare i have laying around. I'll have to fabricate a mount, but right now its sitting on a block of wood so i could take a picture of where i was considering mounting it. Any issues with that general location since its close to the airbox intake?

Also, when i removed the bumper a braided wire with a loop at the end was left hanging from the body [yellow arrow]. Kind of reminds me of a tether for a tire on a race car.  Unless i missed it, didn't see anything like it on the parts list, so if anyone can tell me what it is that would be great.  If it isn't factory i'll probably just remove it.

Also, is there anything else i should do while i have the bumper off?  I've already cleaned out the areas around the radiator, intake and headlight wells. Since the small tears in the splitter are in spots no one will ever see, i will tackle reinforcing those. The tow hook cover is getting a quick shot of paint to freshen it up. And euro lights will be replacing the bumperettes.

Thanks

The wire will unlock the hood in case the lever in the footwell fails.

Thanks. Got a stack of maintenence receipts with the car but not an owners manual. Ordered one this morning,

I think the wire should be routed somewhere behind the left foglight/indicator so that you can reach for the loop when you remove the indicator light.

The owners manual doesn't seem to mention the emergency hood release wire but does discuss the emergency release wire for the trunk. At least I didn't see it in my pdf version. I believe Jaap is spot on with where the wire should go.

Does anyone remember how to disconnect the fog lights when removing the front bumper cover? I was able to relatively easy disconnect the turn signal bulbs, but fog ones have a different design and they do not come off. I did not apply too much force, though, as I have no idea how they need disconnected.

I am curious as to what you cleaned out around the radiator, intake and headlights?

If I'm correct, you need to remove the turn signals first, then you can can access the screws for the fog lights. Should be easy.

If you have the front bumperettes then you need to remove them first. It should be easy to see once those are gone.

Philippe and Jay, thanks for your help. I just wanted to emphasize, that my goal is to remove the bumper cover and currently the only thing preventing me from doing that are the fog lights wires. Ideally, I would disconnect the harness of the fog lights and remove the cover with the lights, however the harness is not accessible.

Do I understand correctly that I need to remove the bumerettes to access the fog light screws then remove the fog lights lenses, unplug the fog light bulbs from the inside the fog light assembly? I imagine that would separate the wires from the fog lights and allow to remove the bumper cover with the fog lights together.

Right.  Those bumperette things.  That could be a different story Rolleyes .  My foglights are removable by just unplugging the connector.  The whole foglight comes off.  I would think that there should be a connector, bumperettes or not.

not exactly

the lens is not separable from the rest of the fog light.  it is all one assembly.

you can access the fog lights from under the car, or through the wheel well.  you have to remove the front apron to access them from under the car.  you have to pull back the wheel well liner to access them from the wheel well.

when i am removing the bumper cover anyway, the way i do it, is when i remove the bumper cover.  when i have it hanging, i unplug the lights.

but, you can remove ht efoglight itself by removing the bumperette, removing the 2 nuts behind it, and then rotating the light out.  it only has a tab on the inboard side that holds it in there.

Here are some shots of my car earlier this year (dead battery, could not get into car to pop hood) The two white studs are where the bumperettes would mount.

Fog removed (was fun as a PO screwed a bolt with a nut behind there somehow to hold the fog in and when loosened just spun) that hood wire should go in there that you found. You can see it looped over the top white stud. Then was able to pull that and get the hood opened.

Installed a c-clip (Wow a part from autozone that I could find!) and placed the loop around the fog light wire.

Fog back in place.
