Ok, I did some more research and I think I now have the answer...part number 944 102 153 06, according to German parts supplier FVD, is a flywheel for a 968 with tiptronic transmission.

See this link

So the hunt is still on for the Porsche Lightweght flywheel. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

You and 150 other people are on the hunt, Best of luck to 147 of them.

The other 3 know who they are are, and wish them NO LUCK!

Luckily RSB has made a great replica for less than the cost of a DMF.

If I can't lay my hands on the Porsche Lightweight flywheel before next year March, my order will be going to Pete. I am hoping he can ship me a balanced Flywheel/pressure plate combo with all the required modified parts. I want to reduce my risk of a screw up as much as possible.

Would that be feasible Pete?

Nice guide. Could you email me that full size pic?

It has been ages since I have updated this thread, but if all goes according to plan my shipment with all kinds of clutch goodies is arriving today. I plan to replace the following over the next couple of days:
- Pressure Plate
- Clutch Disk
- Flywheel...I went for the Dual mass again. I prefer the smoothness of this unit
- Braided clutch hose
- Rear Main seal
- New bolts for the pressure plate as well as the flywheel

I am also waiting on my shipment from RS Barn and a couple of other suppliers. Once they arrive I can do the Airbox Mod and install the heat shield plus stage 1 chip.

If all goes well, I should have a much improved car in a week or two.

If I have forgotten any important items, please let me know so that I can order them and get it installed while the car is up in the air.

Keep us updated! I'm likely to follow in your footsteps shortly as I am not able to afford to replace the clutch on my race car right now and it'll be a short matter of time before it craps out under race conditions.

I hope to learn how to change it myself.

Good Luck - we are cheering for ya!

if you have not changed the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder in the last couple of years, do those at the same time as the hose - the rubber components all age out pretty much at the same rate, and also fail when subjected to new stresses (like increased pressure from a new hose that no longer expands)

You probably also want to change the two small bearings in the clutch fork (not expenisve even from main dealer) and I assume you also replace the throwout bearing. Does your DMF come with a pilot bearing pre-installed otherwise you will also need that.

Thanks Guys,

Flash: I bought an overhaul kit for the slave cylinder, but I am a bit apprehensive to take out the master cylinder. I have heard it is very tought to get it reconnected to the clutch pedal. I am 6ft 4 so lying in the foorwell seems like a tall order. Is there any other way of doing this?

Jaap: Thanks for the advice. I will order the bearings and the shaft from the main dealer tomorrow. There is a bearing in the DMF so I asume that is the pilot bearing and the Clutch kit came with a throwout bearing.

My clutch kit came with some shims/washers. They are all approx 8cm in diameter...two thin ones, one thick one and one that has teeth on the inside. Can anyone tell me what I will need these for?

I am not sure you also need the replace the shaft. When I replaced the clutch it looked fine, so only replaced the small bearings.

The shims/washers are needed when fitting the throwout bearing to the pressure plate. You will see where to put them when you have the old pressure plate out. You need the thick one and the one with teeth for sure and then one or two of the thin ones. The bearing must be a tight fit but should still allow some movement from side to side to allow it to properly center. I used both (the old one had two as well and most pictures I have seen of the throwout bearing installed had two)

Thanks Jaap! We should arrange a get together with all the dutch 968 guys.

Should I be using loctite on the bolts when installing the flywheel and pressure plate. If so which one?

no real "easy" way to change the master, though it only took me about 2.5 hours to change and bleed the entire system

no loctite anywhere
