Cost of replacing clutch
#1

I am curious about the cost of replacing the clutch. Not doing it yourself but done in a shop. Would love to see some numbers from around  the country.

My quote living in Northern California was $1600. Very honest and trustworthy Porsche shop. I have used them for 15 years.

Please let me know what area your quote/job was in.

I did the clutch in mine on the driveway in about 4 hours, the 968 is nowhere near as hard as a 944.

the parts I would guess at about 800$, as it would be foolish not to replace the fulcrum pin and bearings while its all in bits.

so at $800 labour how much do they charge per hour

many shops quote a 968 clutch job assuming it's the same as a 944.  a 944 takes up to 12 hours.  a 968 books out at 4 (i have done it in 3.5 laying on my back).

My mechanic in Reno, who knows 924-944-968 cars very very well, did it for 300 labor. I purchased the parts from different sources because I couldn't find one package which had everything in it at the same place.

I believe that the average shop labor rate in the Bay Area is about $140 an hour. Flash is correct about the labor hours. So 4 hours labor and maybe $800 for parts, $1600 is about right. The last time I did mine in 2012, I paid $1400.

Don't be fooled into getting Sachs clutch kit. The pressure plate is wrong and will make your car very unhappy.

agreed.  way too many people have made this mistake.  yes, it is on the list of "superseded" or "interchangeable" parts, but it is the wrong plate, and results in a very ugly pedal feel.

p.s. - while i know that i have been successful in getting the right plate from sunset imports, though often you have to get it shipped in from germany, many people have successfully gotten it from pete too.  those are the only two sources i know of that carry the right one.

Good info to have . Although the clutch in my car has not ( YET ) been replaced , it does have 115,000 miles on it , so I presume it will soon " expire " . Like every other component in these cars the longevity variances from car to car and driver to driver are absurd ; some clutches fail after 40 K miles, others go 250 K miles, and the same with water pumps , or master cylinders, or alternators, or belts, or ..you name it ! The " YMMV " adage has never been truer than when translated to 968s.

]Here is a quick way to determine clutch disc wear. This is a crude drawing of inspection port on bell housing (drivers side)

You can measure position of clutch fork relative to the front of the inspection port.

New disc measures 26mm

Worn disc measures 32mm

green stripe is correct.  any other color, or lack of color, is incorrect
