Clutch Pedal Noise

My clutch pedal started making a bit of a squeaking noise. It seems to be coming from the spring that is attached to the peddle. The spring looks to have a centering guide that is plastic. I would like to lubricate but not sure WD40 or oil or some other product? Any recommendations?

No oil. Try WD-40. Can't hurt nothing. Are you sure it's the plastic part that squeaks?

If it's a plastic part silicone spray may last longer than WD40.

wd-40 is not a good lube for anything.  pretty good at breaking stuff loose though, due to having so much solvent in it.  tri-flow is much better for lubrication.  silicone is even better for plastic parts.

 

the pedal armature itself is known to wear out at the pin hole.  check that out.  if it goes too far, it snaps

Thanks all. Applied some spray silicon lube and all is good to go at least for now. If it comes back may call for more drastic measures.


Flash, thanks for tip re amature. Really still not sure if that is culprit. Looks like a pia to rebuild.

I WD-40't my squeeky headlights about 9 years ago. They haven't made a peep since. I would say that makes WD-40, in this case at least, a pretty darn good squeek-go-awayer.


With rust on the other hand, I haven't had much success with it.

I think wd40 works OK on metal to metal joints but silicone is better when plastic is involved, I think it sticks better. But, I believe there's better metal to metal lube than wd40 for long term. Bulti, are you sure you drive at night? ?

this is a post hoc ergo proctor hoc situation.  many people think that wd-40 lubricates things because their squeak went away.  in reality, more often than not, it dissolved the corrosion between the components that were squeaking.  there is some lubrication in the compound, but not nearly as much as something like tri-flow.  however, tri-flow does not contain a a solvent, so it won't get rid of a squeak as easily.  it will, however, do a much better job of making sure it does not come back.  the real issue i have with wd-40 is that it will dissolve away any grease in the area, as well as tends to eat away at finishes.

 

and yes, silicone is a MUCH better lubricant on plastic.  i am running around today to apply it to my vinyl windows.  i did it on one big one last week, and the difference was nothing short of amazing.

Silicone is excellent on both plastics and rubber / rubberized components , which contrary to popular belief , can also squeak ( mostly when damp ) . TrI-Flow is great though for most lubrication uses ..


p.s, wait.. silicone , dampness, lubrication ... doesn't this conversation belong on a totally different thread topic , lol ?!

AZ: mmm, maybe I should put my seat a little higher and see if they come on at all, lol.


In any case, if there was any corrosion -and assuming it was the reason they squeeked- the corrosion is gone now, and more importantly, it hasn't come back for nine years. And I drive my car in any weather. And weather can be pretty shitty around here.


The real question is: what to do if it's a plastic part touching a metal one and making a squeek? Aaaah ;-)


White lithium grease in a spray can with PTFE could do the trick also IMO.

Creak is back after using silicon spray. Does "armature" have a nylon part in it that is replaceable? Do I need to replace the whole armature mechanism? Is it one piece for both brake and clutch pedals?

i had a squeeky clutch

 

Replaced the bushes.

 

these are for a LHD car

999 924 039 00 you need two

the bush in the clevis pin was also worn

999 924 002 40 Bush

944 423 387 00 Pin

928 423 517 00 Clevis

 

if it is the spring its a sealed unit and has been changed from green to grey in an update years ago

 

the spring 477 721 353 A, superseded to 928 423 357 04 about $30 dollars from Porsche

 

all the bits dont come to more than $60
