Hey guys, the idea of this unit was to just ship it to whomever needs it, but I've been unable to pry if from Ron's (Midblue) fingers.



This unit that I put together 3 years ago would not come out until it was released and so was perfect for driving with (or Autocross with). When Ron got his ticket signed off, all he had to do was press it in after he drove up to the CHP station, get his ticket signed, and then promptly remove it. Perhaps yours don't have to be quite as complex if there is no intention of driving with it.



Sorry, if I had the unit, I would be able to list the parts I used.

Since 1984 ( sheesh, is that 30 years already ?! - man, I'm old.. ) I have had only replica German plates on the front of my Porsches. During all those years I received just one citation...until Tuesday that is, when I found one on my windshield while parked on a street in San Francisco. You have a choice of paying $ 171 , or , have a " correct it " validation signed off by any police officer and the pay only $ 10.

So I removed the German plate, replaced it with the regular one I keep in the trunk and stopped by a CHP office which is close by , to have the ticket signed off. I was greeted by a very attractive lady CHP officer , I explained the car is in the parking lot with the right plates on, she first signed the ticket but said she'll meet me outside because she is still required to have a visual for formality's sake. Once outside she said : " Nice car ! Not surprised you got a ticket in San Francisco, only that city's parking enforcers would be so lame to hand out a citation for something like this..wastes everyone's time " . And then the funny part of the story ; smiling , she asked me : " - you're probably going to take this plate right off again and put the old one back, aren't you ? ". I replied , also with a smile, " Yup. ". To which she said : " ok, but please wait until you leave our parking lot, it just wouldn't look right on the security cameras we have around here " . I may be in love with her :-) :-)

So of course I removed the front plate again, at $ 10 a pop I can do this all day long, LOL . But now I wonder if the " German " plate attracts more attention than no plate at all . Think I'll test that hypothesis for a while and see how it works out.

In Pa there is no front plate requirement. Guess the cradle of of liberty and the birthplace of democracy as we know it has better things to do with our gov't employee's time. Like have no budget or need to fix a pension crisis!

I don't think there has been a Corvette built in the last 25 years that has a place for a front plate. I carry mine in the car and just put it in the front window when I park in the Peoples Republic of Berkeley or Beverly Hills, the only two places I've been cited.

In Boulder they will get you for no front plate if you put it behind the windshield. It has to be in a certain location (on the front of the car at a certain height) and if it's not, you do not properly display a front plate. I got a ticket for this myself. A friend got pulled over while driving on I-25 for having a replica Euro front plate. He was hassled on the side of the highway with his elderly parents in his car and told the car could be impounded (fictitious plate) so it's also a reason to get pulled over anytime a cop feels the need.



It's too much hassle so I run front plates on everything now.

I've been driving without a front plate on the Porsches for over 20 years. Got cited once, was a fix-it ticket with no charge, and then removed the plate again about a year later.



Speaking of going to the police station. For some other fix-it item I went to the city police station to get it signed off. At the front door reception desk they said they don't perform that service at the station (cheesh!) but I have to drive around and find an officer on patrol. So I stood at the exit area for their patrol car parking area until one came out -- flagged him down, and he just signed the ticket without even looking at the car. Our government at work.

Seems like they could ticket you or arrest you for stalking an officer!

$ 171 in San Francisco - No idea if that amount varies from city to city or county to county and so on.. I suspect it does.

Can be pretty steep in NJ; many towns use anything like the missing front plate as a money maker; routinely over $100

Flash you're so right about the airport and Santa Monica! This was with another car, but I got a no-front-plate ticket at LAX shortly after 9-11 when airport cops were even more 'enthusiastic' than usual. Unfortunately I forgot to pay the ticket and a few months later had to appear in court - in Santa Monica! - to be publicly shamed. While I was in the courthouse paying my tab, I got a ticket for - you guessed it - no front plate!



Down here in OC, where cops are evidently instructed to rape citizens for cash a bit less than in L.A., I've found it's a good idea to run with no front plate and/or keep some tint on your front side windows (both of which are illegal here in CA, but not strictly enforced). If you get pulled over for minor speeding or rolling a stop, sometimes, if the cop is in a good mood, he/she will forgo the big ticket and only cite you for the fix-it item(s). Having your young daughter in the passenger seat also seems to do the trick.

the law in california is a bit weird when it comes to front license plates.



if you are issued 2, you have to display 2.



it must be no lower than 16" and no higher than 54"



it must be affixed so as not to swing. how weird is that?



so, if you have it taped into your windshield, you would think that it would meet all of these, BUT, you are not allowed to have anything that blocks your view, nor is larger than a 7" diagonal screen.



there is a temporary gadget floating around that mounts the plate to an insert for the front tow hook. this allows you to get the ticket corrected without having to drill holes in your bumper cover. it is NOT a true fix, as it is against the law to remove the plate, but it will get you past the ticket. there is a thread here somewhere that shows it.

I was stopped for speeding on I-5 near Firebough while towing my jetski. Officer said limit while towing is 55mph (I was going 65ish), I told him if I went 55 I would be a speed bump for the 18 wheelers going 75+ and while he agreed, he said the law is the law. Didn't give me a ticket for speeding but got a fix it ticket for my front plate missing. It was actually stolen years ago but that's no excuse. Had to pay to get new plates since you cant just order a replacement, then pay to clear the ticket because a "fix it" ticket is not actually free at all.

he's right, regardless of intuitive logic. towing is inherently dangerous, and most drivers don't know how to drive while towing. they frequently don't realize that it takes almost twice as long to stop. they don't realize the effects of the load on handling, and most importantly, don't realize that other drivers can't see around you as easily, and may make dangerous moves as a result (this is why in california you are limited to the 2 right hand lanes, and are prohibited from using the HOV lanes). at speeds above 55, the amount of time a driver has to make an evasive move is dramatically decreased. with towing, this makes things sketchy.



if an 18 wheeler was doing 75, i'd call CHP. that is a huge crime to them. caught at that speed, the driver will likely lose his license. especially on I-5, the majority of stops made and/or citations issued are to truckers. the CHP is very focused on keeping their speed down, equipment up to snuff, and loads within limits.



you lucked out on the ticket. i'm surprised you had to pay to get plates though. were they custom plates?

I recently bought a car and drove it home from Tennessee*. Route 40 West was crammed with trucks - not a single one of them doing less than 75. Typically they were at about 80. I was leery about speed traps through the middle of America and kept it under 75 for a while, but by the time I got to New Mexico I had the cruise set at 90.



*It's getting very difficult to find a BMW (335i in this case) with a manual transmission in California. How sad is that?

Is this speed limit restriction for towing vehicles a national law or state by state. Man who goes 55? I do keep good spaces in front of me to stop which of course get filled up by people cutting in front of me. The proliferation of all the construction here in Pa with the very narrow two lanes with the side barriers gets a bit hairy. Most people won't pass a truck because they are scared of the narrowness of the passing lane. Towing a trailer is often a leap of faith as you go by!
