I just read this post ( see below ) on the Maserati forum, but it transcends to our cars just as much, so FYI :

p.s since I've gotten a fix-it ticket while the car was parked in San Francisco which is notorious for issuing those kind of citations, I keep my tow hook adapted mount plate in the trunk and screw it in only while the car is parked in the city..

In Connecticut. the state police have a new electronic tool. If a car goes past them without a front <a class="" href="http://i.viglink.com/?key=13c69cd2fc165e682f699e273d90f7cd&insertId=fed8bb52a1cf5382406e738747c425c3&type=CD&mid=undefined&exp=60%3ACI1C55A%3A4&libId=jgwsiqum0100pqwa000DA522gfoo0&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maseratilife.com%2Fforums%2Fgranturismo%2F88833-front-plate-mistake-2.html&v=1&out=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%2Fref%3Dnb_sb_noss%3Furl%3Dsearch-alias%253Dautomotive%26field-keywords%3Dplate&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maseratilife.com%2Fforums%2Fgranturismo%2F&title=front%20plate%20mistake%20-%20Page%202%20-%20Maserati%20Forum&txt=%3Cspan%3Eplate%3C%2Fspan%3E" title="Link added by VigLink">plate</a> or without a front <a class="" href="http://i.viglink.com/?key=13c69cd2fc165e682f699e273d90f7cd&insertId=fed8bb52a1cf5382406e738747c425c3&type=CD&mid=undefined&exp=60%3ACI1C55A%3A4&libId=jgwsiqum0100pqwa000DA522gfoo0&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maseratilife.com%2Fforums%2Fgranturismo%2F88833-front-plate-mistake-2.html&v=1&out=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%2Fref%3Dnb_sb_noss%3Furl%3Dsearch-alias%253Dautomotive%26field-keywords%3Dplate&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maseratilife.com%2Fforums%2Fgranturismo%2F&title=front%20plate%20mistake%20-%20Page%202%20-%20Maserati%20Forum&txt=%3Cspan%3Eplate%3C%2Fspan%3E" title="Link added by VigLink">plate</a> that their scanner will read, the trooper will get an automatic alert on that car.

In Vermont, a car cannot go through yearly inspection without a front and rear <a class="" href="http://i.viglink.com/?key=13c69cd2fc165e682f699e273d90f7cd&insertId=fed8bb52a1cf5382406e738747c425c3&type=CD&mid=undefined&exp=60%3ACI1C55A%3A4&libId=jgwsiqum0100pqwa000DA522gfoo0&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maseratilife.com%2Fforums%2Fgranturismo%2F88833-front-plate-mistake-2.html&v=1&out=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%2Fref%3Dnb_sb_noss%3Furl%3Dsearch-alias%253Dautomotive%26field-keywords%3Dplate&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maseratilife.com%2Fforums%2Fgranturismo%2F&title=front%20plate%20mistake%20-%20Page%202%20-%20Maserati%20Forum&txt=%3Cspan%3Eplate%3C%2Fspan%3E" title="Link added by VigLink">plate</a> and the plate cannot be covered in any way by a plate holder, even on its border.

On one of my other cars ( Vette ) I mounted a <a class="" href="http://i.viglink.com/?key=13c69cd2fc165e682f699e273d90f7cd&insertId=fed8bb52a1cf5382406e738747c425c3&type=CD&mid=undefined&exp=60%3ACI1C55A%3A4&libId=jgwsiqum0100pqwa000DA522gfoo0&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maseratilife.com%2Fforums%2Fgranturismo%2F88833-front-plate-mistake-2.html&v=1&out=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%2Fref%3Dnb_sb_noss%3Furl%3Dsearch-alias%253Dautomotive%26field-keywords%3Dplate&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.maseratilife.com%2Fforums%2Fgranturismo%2F&title=front%20plate%20mistake%20-%20Page%202%20-%20Maserati%20Forum&txt=%3Cspan%3Eplate%3C%2Fspan%3E" title="Link added by VigLink">plate</a> holder that can be snapped up in the typical vertical position when needed but also can be pushed down and rearward so the plate is underneath the car and not visible.  Of course, that does require some ground clearance.

I was thinking on the last one if you could build a device with a remote you can use to  pop up the plate, after you're pulled over  and then say to the puzzled cop :  " - Officer, obviously I have a front plate., so you must have just been imagining not seeing it .. tell me, have you had anything to drink today ?!   "    Eh, maybe not a good idea ..a sure way to get a ride in the patrol car, wearing handcuffs..

PA has no front licence plate, bu then you have to deal with the holes left from the other guys. One of these days I will have the nose resprayed and get rid of the plate forever.

Jay, when it goes from a "want" to a "need" you will revisit that decision.

If it doesn't make my car go faster, stop faster or handle better, I have another way to spend my $$$

A front plate :

1 adds weight, and consequently it adversely affects the power to weight ratio

2 interferes with air flow and thus impacts the optimum engine cooling

3 interferes with the aerodynamics and may affect both the acceleration by 0.000000000001% , and ( same % ) for attaining top speed

Bumperplugs are a much better solution :-) :-)

I almost mis-read that and thought it said butt plugs are the best solution, glad I was wrong

A license plate and bracket must weigh at least a pound. Ask any racer what it costs to remove one pound of weight and I'll bet it is more than $36. I spent more than that per pound on my 914. Plus the esthetics!

Ahh, but doesn't the front plate balance the back plate to keep the 50/50 weight distribution (he says with tongue firmly planted in cheek).  As for the retractable plate, similar to Mr. Bond's DB5 that sported a revolving plate with several different plates available for display.

Just making sure - you guys know the retractable plate holders are available on Amazon, right?

I have the manual one on my car for when I park on the street. Installs under the chin in like 10 minutes.

I got ticketed in Beverly Hills for no front plate, probably since I was a visitor, not a resident. If you are a visitor you have to have a piece of paper in your front window that identifies yourself as such if you park on a residential street overnight. I also noticed that there were a lot of resident owned Corvettes that lacked front plates. I don't think that there has been a Corvette built in the past 20 years that has a place for a front plate. I decided to pay the fine and let it be at that. Fast forward two weeks and I get tagged again, so this time I went to court. I pointed out to the judge that there were a great many Corvettes owned (as shown on their resident bumper stickers) by Beverly Hills residents that lacked front plates, and presented pictures to back up my claim. I then asked whether it was the policy of the City of Beverly Hills to discriminate, against non-residents, or against Porsche's when it came to front plate enforcement. The judge admitted he hadn't noticed that Corvettes don't have front plates.

My case was dismissed.

Residents of Beverly Hills.  No front license plate !   ( but no doubt they have a resident sticker somewhere on that car though.. )

Chris, had things not gone your way, you could have escalated that argument to discrimination based on national origin ...of the car.      Tongue
