Front grille blank insert?
#1

In my possession there is a sort of "blank" piece that exists for the manual cars only. I think that it should be attached to the grille somehow using 3 clips. For some reason, and no matter what I do, it won't fit to the grille, so I'm sure that either it doesn't belong where I want to attach it to, or I'm doing something wrong.

Does anybody know the how and where? The partnr is 944.505.561.00. Nr 45 on the drawing. Thanks!

it's been a LONG time since i saw that piece in there, as i am now using that space for something else, but as i remember it does indeed clip on there, and uses some spring clips similar to what holds down the plastic piece sitting on top of the radiator.

Yes it takes three large metal clips to hold that in place and it attaches to the mesh grill, on the driver side

I happen to be replacing these brittle old plastic parts on my car right now and I just took the old plate you show off of the original grill it was held with either three or four of those large clips

I will snap a photo or two when I'm finally putting mine back together could be another few days or so

Thanks guys. I put it on there using the 3 clips the PET mentions. It just isn't a tight fit in the lower corner... hence my doubt. I suppose this is the way it fits?

It's just a blanking plate for the missing tip oil cooler

Mine vanished long ago

the problem with removing it is that it introduces unwanted air into the engine bay.  this reduces the efficiency of the radiator by reducing the negative pressure behind it.  removing that plate, and not doing anything with the air, is as bad as removing the belly pan.

this is actually one of the issues that arises from using the mesh grill.  the blank plate doesn't look right, and you have to fiddle around down there to get it to still do its job, unless you do what i did and run a duct from there to feed cold air to someplace it can do some good, and offset the reduction in negative pressure

Okay I just tried to fit together the new factory mesh grill and new blank plate, and I can confirm that it's a lame @ss fit. I could try to shave some plastic here and there for a better fit but I probably won't bother in the interest of just getting it done.

I plan to install the new grille first, and then attach the blank plate.

does the new blank plate fit the old grill, and visa versa?

Good question.Old and new blank plates are identical and the poor fit is the same for new blank old grill as well as new grill old blank

This area is entirely complex curves that have to fit together,so not really a big deal, the metal clips are tough and will definitely be able to hold the pieces in place.

If I wanted to get anal about it I could fill in any small gaps with JB Weld or some kind of sealer, but it will be fine without doing that

Doesn't fit like a German glove, that's for sure.

I was going to offer my old lower grille if anyone wanted it for the price of shipping but it's too broken up to be worth the shipping charge of such a long box. A new one was less than $100 from sunset. However if you are missing the blank plate I will sell it for the price of shipping which should be cheap, put it in a padded envelope.first responder gets it

Send me a PM
