front bumper gaskets install
#1

Hi, Anyone have any instructions for installing new seals around the top of the front bumper? The seals on my car stop a couple of inches short of the top edge of the front bumper, so they do not reach the front edge of the hood. Looks wrong. I have the new seals from Porsche, and I read something about inserting the metal tube in one end. And do I cut the new seals to length - they seem long. Thanks for any guidance.

you have to remove the bumper covers (the really large polyurethane body panels at each end of the car). a search here should turn up the procedure. i wrote up the one for the front a number of years ago.

The seals, it you are talking about the black "O" strip may also be stapled to the bumper edge so be prepared to remove and reattach it.

After you remove the bumper cover(s), you will be able to see how the new seal fits. You shouldn't have to cut it. I would strongly encourage you to glue the new seal to the bumper cover before reinstalling the cover. Getting it back on can be a little tricky, especially if you're doing it without an assistant (which really helps!), and having that seal move around while you're trying to get things to line up can get frustrating.

How are the seals that go between the rocker panels and the car? These tend to come unglued after awhile, and refreshing them can really spiff up the look of the car. Replacing them isn't too difficult, and there's a write-up somewhere (I think in the DIY section) describing how to do it. If you can't open it (which I seem to remember being the case), let me know, and I can send you a copy if you end up deciding to do this job.

I have replaced these on both my 968's and it isn't to bad a job. You need to remove the bumper but the procedure isn't to time consuming. If you have some one give u a hand just to pull the bumper forward after removing all the screws that is good. There is excellent directions on this forum that I used I think Flash wrote it up and gives step by step instructions. If u need help just post.

Hi, thanks for the replies. I have the bumper cover off. The old seals/'O' strip were just lightly glued down, and I have removed them. The staple holes are there in the strips and the bumper area where the strips mount, but no staples, so I figure the installation is not original. My questions: (1) are the strips supposed to run all the way up the bumper part to the very end, where the bumper part meets the lower edge of the hood? And (2) how do you use the soft metal rods that come with the new 'O' strips? Seems like these soft metal rods go in to the 'O' hole at each end, and I think I read something about bending these rods in to a 'U' so they kind-of hold the seals at each end. I am not sure about that. My plan is to 'glue' the new seals down to the bumper part using weatherstrip adhesive. I might try inserting some staples back through the existing holes - I guess they make it more secure.

Cloud9...68 - yes the seals around the rocker panels are poor, both around the long piece and the short front piece. Looks pretty straightforward to remove the panels but I will search for the write-up you mention, thanks. One of these seals looks like it has 'shrunk' and looks now about 2" too short. I am wondering if the soft metal rods are actually really important, securing the ends of the strips so they do not shrink over time. I am guessing when I get the new strips for the rocker panels they will come with more of the soft metal rods.

Thanks again.

Yes the seals run up to the were the bumper meets the hood, that is were u will use the little metal strips that slide into the seals. I never cut any thing but if u feel they r to long I guess u can cut the ends then insert the metal strips and then bend into a u and hook behind the front of bumper. @- Oh I think I answered each one already. I never glued my down but I know some to do that, I had staples on my 93 but not on my 92?? I just laid the seals in place so far all ok.

I have done all the rocker panels and that job is a little easier I think. Much less removal time and smaller pieces. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/EmoticonCar.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

If anyone has a pic of how the little metal strips bend around the bumper cover at each end that would be great. I have 3 jobs going on at the same time - I installed a new mesh/grille in the bumper cover, and I installed a new a/c condenser, and I am replacing these seals. It will be great to get the car back together. I am using a maxjax I installed recently - makes it so much easier.

I did not get this just right on my car but it is just bent in a u shape and hooked behind the were the spoiler bumper meets the fender. I wish I could post a picture but I have never been able to post pictures on this forum every time I try it says it is to big??

I will re-install the bumper cover this weekend, with the new seal strips. I have 2 metal rods per seal, so I guess the u-hook thing occurs at both ends of each seal - the hood end and the wheel arch end, right?

It's gonna look great, and then on to the rocker panel seals....

Just to say, did the install, didn't look good, so had the bumper cover off-and-on several times, and in the end it looks pretty good. One issue is that the clips that the bumper cover slides in to push the seal outwards as the bumper cover is sliding in. Actually it was really worth the effort, because it looks way better than it did, and it looks way better for having worked to get the new-install right. But I am still not sure what to do with the 2" lengths hanging out at each end.....

Also just fyi I replaced the mesh grille in the bumper cover - it also looks way better than the old one.
