Factory Alarm problem
#1

Today I got a phone call from the manager at the storage facility where I keep the 968, he said the alarm was going off. I had my wife go to the garage and unlock the car to turn it off and instructed her to leave it that way until I got home.

I just got back from checking it out hoping that it was something stupid like the trunk not being closed, the glovebox or something but I didn't find anything obvious.

Saturday after we got back from driving it I put it in the garage and locked it and noticed the light on the door didn't blink right away like it normally does. Normally it blinks a bunch of times then goes into a rythm of 1 blink every few seconds. This time when I locked it there was no blinking for about 5 seconds then it started to blink twice every few seconds.

When I stopped to see it today whenever I lock it the same thing happens as on Saturday. Also I noticed if you lock and unlock it a few times in a row after a couple times the power locks stop functioning. To get them working again I have to get into the car, put the key in the ignition and press the central lock button. Maybe this part of it is normal?

Any ideas???

i would look to make sure that all of the pin switches at all of the openings are going in and out smoothly - it sounds like one is hanging up

also, if you have a keyless remote, the wire that goes to the rear may be getting nicked - i had this happen

I checked the switches while I was there, I should have mentioned that. This is going to bug the heck out of me until I get a chance to work on it this weekend. Is there some sort of code to the way the lights blink?

I just got a chance to flip through the service manual and it doesn't give much information except to connect special porsche part #xxxxxxx to diagnose.

Can someone please tell me the squence that the light on the door(s) blink when they lock their car?

mine blinks 21 times in rapid succession, then goes to a repetitive slow blinking

never actually counted, but that sounds right. Flashes rapidly and then will slow to one quick flash every 2 seconds or so. My guess would be that yours is doing some sort of diagnostic check to make sure it's ready to arm and that no doors are open, ie, as a stuck switch, but you've already checked that. It is possible that one of the switches could have failed in the closed position or something odd like that. We recently had to diagnose a home security system that we didn't install and although the system was working, we found the problem to be a bunch of bad switches that were stuck in the closed position, making the sytem "think" it was ready to be armed, but in reality, you could open and close that particular window without the system going into alarm. Allowed the kids to sneak out at will without setting off the alarm.

I don't ever remember seeing any diagnostic info on the factory alarm, so not sure any of us can help troubleshoot it. I'd start by physically removing the switches one at a time and shorting them closed to isolate any potential bad switches. Other than that, swapping the control module with a known good one would tell you if it's a switch or the module itself.

that's exactly what i was alluding to above - i had the same thing happen with one of the pin switches - can't remember which one, but it was sticking and causing the problem - i got in there and cleaned it up and lubed it and all was right with the world again

I guess this will be my Sunday project.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I wonder what a dealer would get to read the alarm code...

You can lock the car without the alarm by opening the passengerdoor. Lock the doors by using the swith on the dashboard. You close the door and the car is locked without an active alarm.

It also stops draining the battery by an uncontroled activation of the alarm or lights.

So last night I couldn't sleep so I went to mess around with the alarm some more. I got to the garage and locked it and the alarm was acting normally. I took her for a quick ride and stopped before putting it away and armed it again. It wasn't blinking properly. Did some investigation and it seems the drivers door switch had a bad connection, took it out and cleaned it and so far all is well.

The lesson I learned from this is, ALWAYS LISTEN TO FLASH!
