Intermittent Starting Problem?
#1

My '93 Cab has recently developed an intermittent starting problem. Every once in a while, when I try to start the car, it seems to turn over for a coupe of seconds and then it just makes a sound like a vacuum or air swishing. If I turn it off and try again, it starts up fine. Suggestions?

sounds like maybe a sticky check valve back by the fuel pump

nah - that would not explain the noises. it sounds to me like the fuel line filling up. that would happen if the check valve were stuck open. happens quite a bit. basically the fuel goes back into the tank, instead of staying in the rail like it should. then, when you try to start the car, it takes between 3 and 5 seconds for the fuel to reach the injectors. when it does start, it might even stumble for a couple of seconds.

This seems to be a common problem in these cars - I know mine did it, back in the distant past when it actually ran, as opposed to being a permanent fixture on jack stands in my garage. How many people have cured it by replacing their fuel pump check valves? In other words, is this check valve something everybody should think of replacing, just due to their age?

Is it available from any parts houses, or is this something to order from Sunset?

autohausaz has a Bosch unit for $16.69, part No. 1587010536 . I need a few other small things for various cars, and shipping is free at autohausaz on orders over $50. Think I'll order a fuel filter, too, seeing as it's been about five years since I've replaced mine, and it's been sitting with stagnate gas since April of 2010.

Just to be sure we're on the same page, when the problem occurs, the engine starts to turn over and then stops turning over - just the "whooshing" sound is heard. No cranking. Still sound like the check valve?

lol - the starter motor would not make that kind of noise. "whooshing" is air or liquid. starters either whirr, grind, buzz, or humm.
