Very hard starting then uneven idle
#1

Hi all. Recently my 968 developed this problem and it continues to this day. Car will start and run for a brief few seconds then stop. This happens, many, many times until it actually starts (ran the battery dead and had to boost it last time). Once running and warm the idle verys from 900 to 2000 rpm, up an down, up and down. Once running and up to temperature it will start no problem. I saw similar posts to the starting issue but mine seems more severe. Any ides? Thanks much. Dave J.

I'd remove distributor cap and inspect the components for wear, corrosion, etc..

while at it, make sure all the plug wires / dist wire are connected well

or could it be the dreaded DME relay ? hopefully said... since that's about $ 25 and no labor charge :-)

if not , perhaps the idle stabilizer valve ? or, the temp sensor ?

there are a few things that could cause this. a few of them are:

dirty MAF

sticking ICV

vacuum leak

sticky injectors

loose spark plugs

i've had all of the above create the symptom.

first, check the plugs to make sure they are torqued properly

then, clean the MAF with MAF cleaner

then, hook up a vacuum guage

if that does not turn up the culprit, you get to start working harder

Great thanks guys. I had already changed the wires and plugs but will check dist cap and make sure everything is clean and tight on these basic ignition components. Will also clean the MAF and see if that helps. If not I will move on to some of your other suggestions. Stay tuned.
