Tip shifts hard
#1

Hi folks,

Looking for some answers. Tip suddenly won't or have troble shifting from D. It's fine using manual shift in D. However, when I tried to shift to park, it was very difficult to do so.

Incidentally, I hear this rattling / rumbling noise from the back of the car in D (on the highway). There were no indication of a problem when I first started the car getting on the road.

Thanks in advance for any insights with this problem

Quick update, jack up the car and check the transmission. Maybe the transaxle shifted or something and now I can shift. Even though I ' m getting a load groaning noise from the back on the road and it's engine speed dependent. I tried putting the car in neutral on the road and there,s no noise from the back, only when in gear. Any ideas?

Yes take it to a mechanic! Loud noises from the rear, hmm no good. Course what do I know other than sight and smell with regard to the rear! Lol

Lol, I found a thread where someone said the trans mount could be the problem. So I jacked up the passenger side and

Sure enough, Looks like the bolt to the trans rubber mount is seared off!

Looks like the mount is available from Germany but, the bolt is not available. Thanks to Sunset for getting the parts

Even though it's going to take a while.

Side note, I can still drive the car as the drive tube is resting on the torsion bar carrier. It appears that this is what's causing the

Noise on the road.

Hope this helps someone else in the future

To add another instance where there was something similar. My tip had similar symptoms once; the shifter was very tight, something was binding while trying to move it between D, R, neutral and park. It was a broken transmission mount, as a result there was extra weight on the cable that goes back there causing this binding effect while moving the shifter. No pictures or visual description, but the alignment of the trans must cause a shift in the weight somehow. But I never had the "noise" you describe. Got the mount replaced and has been fine ever since for about 5-6 years now.

Thanks for the responses. When I was under there, it looks like it's going to be really hard to get the mount off. I can see

The two nuts on the passenger side but not on the driver side. Looks like it's going to the shop when the parts arrives.

Phew, I thought I needed a new trans.

Thanks again to the community

Just looked at the receipt for the work. They also found some threads that were stripped on the trans:

- Labor R&R the trans, drill out an install a Time Cert in the damaged area: $789

- new trans mount: $188.

The total with miscellaneous was $1,025. I remember being pretty upset. But my estimated for a trans R&R should be no more than $500- $600, plus maybe an hour for the timecert. At this shop, it seems too often the price comes out higher than estimated.

So not a cheap repair.

Quick update. Unable to remove one of the nuts holding the mount. Seems like I am slowly stripping it using the 13 mm socket. Removed the crossmember bolts and able to move the crossmember about 6 inches. Easier access but still no luck with the nut.

Pretty stuck at this point as I can't remove the crossmember with the trans. still in place.
