I will get him to check the fluid

Wondered if might be the micro switches on the gear selector

doesn't sound like AFT. In reading quickly thru the workshop manual for the tip, there appear to be a number of possible causes.  I didn't see this specific problem, although it references a "power flow" problem, but that's probably not the cut off problem. The manual says to first obtain a diagnostic code reading. Can he find a shop with an ODB1 reader? Any fluid leaks noted? Also, there's a strainer in the transmission that might be clogged.

Maybe something useful can be found here, especially the NOTE part in the diagnostic section:

Yeah, emergency operation seems to be what is occurring.  I like on online manual, didn't know there was one around.

Did the tiptronic warning light come on when and around the engine gets cut? Could be as simple as a loose ground cable. i had a similar issue a few months ago and turns out it was the ground cable that came loose.

the tip warning light does not come on, you could drive it 20 miles backwards and it would be fine, the moment you select a forward gear the engine cuts does not even give the torque converter time to load up.

its just like turning the ignition off....

Maybe resetting the ECU helps?

I have a suspicion its something to do with the micro switches on the gear selector,

as in you cant start in gear or get the key out
