Car is once again starting hard when cool. Worse if it sits idle for a few days. Sometimes needs 8-10 tries to get started -then runs rough for about 3 seconds. After that it is perfect. Have replaced the DME relay as that was a real problem that I had when I first bought the car (now I have a spare so that's not a bad idea), replaced the temperature sensor on the engine block to the DME (had a spare so no big deal), and replaced the plugs as part of regular service about 8000 km ago. not sure where to go next. I am sure that it is here somewhere if I search enough but this way I also get to keep in touch.
White must be a bad colour - I never have problems with the blue car!

I was thinking along the same lines as Smokie, could it be that you fuel pressure takes longer to build up? Plugged filter or weak pump could cause that; you would need a presure tester hooked up when you start it cold to check.

How old was the spare DME that you used?
After buying my car I replaced the DME as many on this board highly advised it. 1 year later my car had starting problems but only when cold! Id crank and crank then on turn 5 or 9 it would fire up. Swapped back in the old DME after trying many other avenues to no avail and that was it. My newer DME started failing after only a year.
if you still have the old DME, cant hurt to pop it back in and give it a try the next time she wont start.

It seems that the idle stabilisor is not working properly. either because a faulty dme relay or the stabilisor has to be cleaned or the electrical connector from it has to be cleaned.
If you start by short clicks the car will probably run a lot faster. maybe in the second or third time.

Fuel filter was, I think, done a while back but I will check it. The problem does seem to be temperature related. Seems odd that fule filter would act up on cold car but not warm car. The replacement DME relay was new but before I bought one I swapped DME relays with cab - no difference in either.
