Clunk after failed start attempt

Car was hot after a long pull yesterday. About 10 minutes after stopping, starter goes yin-yin-yin-yin-yin clunk. And the clunk was loud. Did it twice. Third time it started and I dared not turn it off until we were parked, ass-end-in on a slight incline for potential bump-start today, at the hotel.



I consulted the Dr. and he thought either loose starter motor bolts or a potential <acronym title='dual mass flywheel'>DMF</acronym>. No other clutch-type or significant drive line problems.



I searched thoroughly and find a lot of gummy starter problems but nothing with a clunk. Anyone?

Oh yea almost forgot - anyone ever bump start this car? Its been 30+ years since I had to do that in my old Fords.

Not sure, but old starters don't like heat and need time to cool. Could be time to replace it.

On a somewhat related topic, after fixing my fan relay my alternator has been running much cooler

Sounds like it could be something to do with the mechanism that engages the starter motor with the gear that is engaged with the flywheel. If it was cranking the engine and quite cranking with the loud clunk, I'm guessing the clunk was the starter gear disengaging from the starter motor. Not sure how the 968 engagement works, so I can only guess based on the symptoms.

Wires connected to the starter can cecome corroded and the insulation frays so that the wires touch, take a peek under there.

Hi Rxter,



I have this same problem from time-to-time - seems to only happen in damp cooler weather. I have suspected that I have a case of Gummy Starter Syndrome as is well reported on the site. I am keeping an eye on it for the moment and will probably service mine before our next wet season anyway. We have some really nice weather here in Brisbane at the moment and starter working perfectly although I do have a consistent once-off stumble when starting cold in the mornings (I see another post on that topic as well). Other than that, my car has been running beautifully lately - can't last!!

If you did have to replace the starter, you sure don't need a Porsche mechanic....it is the easiest starter I had ever replaced. If you had it up on a lift, you could change it out in 10 minutes. Anyone could do it.

I get the same thing occasionally. It usually happens when the weather is warm and so is the car. On my list to replace this winter along with new motor mounts and coolant hoses.
