Rearend Leak

I have a 95, 968 cabriolet, tiptronic. I don't get it out much but I started noticing what appeared to be grease stains under the back bumper. I knew nothing could be back there, so I didn't worry about it. Finally, I looked, and there is something back there, including a fluid resevoir. The fluid seemed ok. I can't remember it being anywhere but centered under the car, but also i don't necessarily park it in the same place each time. Nothing wet, so it may be dripping after I drive it and then soaking into the concrete. I don't know if I got paranoid, but I thought I started hearing noises in the back after I noticed the fluid. I am heading to the shop very soon, but I would love to go with a little knowledge. Does anyone know what is back there? Is it safe to drive? 50k miles. thanks

A big greasy and leaking transmission. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> It could be your due for a Trans fluid change and service which would include a new gasket for the pan. It could also be as simple as the seal for the cap to the transmission fluid tank.

There's a seal to the rear driveshaft, likely the passenger side, that can leak. Mine does.. Part is twelve bucks.

I've notice a few drips back there on mine also but never inspected as it is only 2 or so small ones, I will check it out later and let you guys know, maybe it's a new common thing wiht tips. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Sorry it took awhile to get under my car but is looks like mine is just seeping a bit from the pan gasket (cork) and the drain plug seal for the diff.

Sounds like it's time for a trans/diff fluid change and filter change. If you don't like wrenching and getting dirty then take it to someone to do. It can be a pain trying to catch all that fluid and then a real pain putting it back in.

Doing a trans service isn't too bad if you plan out where the fluid is going while you drop the pan.

Start by breaking all the bolts loose then remove them starting in one corner (facing away from you); take them out even side to side and the corner you started with will slowly drop and the fluid will flow in a controlled mess.

Yes, filling the tip's on a Porsche is a pain. Some use a turkey baster but if you can come up with some sort of pump its much easier.

The 928 was a little easier as it has a drain plug in the pan and torque converter. It gets most of it out, maybe a quart or so left in the pan. I used a cheap fluid transfer pump and it worked out well. It even pumped in the gear oil to the differential.
