small oil leak
#1

Hi guys

after i have replaced rocker cover/sump gasket and basically everything i could which had a slight weap i have now found nother one. but cant figure out where its coming from.

My question is the oil looks to be coming from the oil filter housing or maybe the balance shaft cover which one is more likely to be the cause? is one of these a common leak area any help would be great.

Its the only leak on the whole car other wise its bone dry

When i look from underneath its heard to see where its coming from ,

once agin thanks for any help in advance.

Balance shaft housing leak is more common.

thanks for the help i thought it would be that but so difficult to spot and at least now you siad that i can attck that first rather than stripping the whole of the oil filter housing side.

There's a lot of threads on this topic. Do a search or look in OEM Technical /Engines.

If you changed the valve cover gasket you have to make sure and put some RTV on the corners of the gasket otherwise they can leak. If the front/lower side of the new gasket leaks (the most likely) it will dribble unseen onto the top of the oil filter and you will appear to have a leak from the bottom of the oil filter.

when you say valve cover gasket are you referring to the rocker cover or something else?

also if it is the balance shaft housing is it usually a gasket, seal or a crack that causes the leak

thanks

Balance shaft housing itself is sealed with Loctite 574. The shafts themselves turn in sealing rings. Either could leak, but I think you could tell the difference from where the oil is. I would think a crack is very unlikely.

I'll modify my terminology, cam cover is probably more correct <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Rocker cover I always think of as older push rod engines.
