Transmission problem. Stuck in first?
#1

Waiting on tow. Felt something odd going down the interstate and pulled over. After cranking back up, car operates normally in first gear, but stalls if I try to start in any other gear, including reverse.

Shifter feels normal, but have to fight it a little to get in gear other than first.

If I take it out of gear, it will not roll.

Seems like transmission is staying in first. Maybe shift fork is broken?

Car is a 94 968. 258k on car and tranny, unknown miles on clutch. Tranny was apart maybe 2 years ago for synchro in 3rd gear.

Thanks for any help!

the shifter feels normal? you are able to move it from one gear to the next, and you feel it engaging each gear?

how does the clutch feel?

Yes. If sitting still the shifter feels normal. If driving in 1st, it grinds if I try to go to second.

Clutch feels normal.

What happens if you start out in second gear (on a hill). Can you then shift to another gear?

You can't start in any gear besides first. Stalls. Even in reverse. I think the first gear cog must be staying engaged.

Sounds like it to me. Never had it happen in a car, but it happened with my Farmall Cub - same symptom.

  • Pinion gear shattered? Sounds like the clutch is ok. CV joints aren't broke are they? Just some ideas.

so, you can put it in each gear sitting still. you feel the engagement into each gear. well, that eliminates the linkage.

if you can start the car in neutral and then put it in first, that eliminates the clutch.

that only leaves the gearbox.
