Problem solved- that darn balance shaft
#1

I recently bought a 968 with about 80K miles on it--its the 2nd one i have owned.  Records showed that all belts, water pump etc had just been replaced recently.  There was a slight belt whine and the stick shift vibrated at all gears--causing noise, rattle, etc.

So i take it to my mechanic to verify the work claimed was actually done, and to get a good once over on the car.  They adjusted the drive and balance belt and the rear shocks needed replacing.  Trouble was, they had no solution for the vibrating stick, and the belt whine actually became louder.  Their response was "well those engines have a tendency to make that noise"  I was not convinced.

So it is easy to inspect the balance belt--just remove the distributor and the upper belt guard and you can access most everything.  What i noticed is that the balance belt was as tight as a guitar string, so I adjusted it based on all the scientific methods discussed in these forums, AND i noticed that the balance shaft was not aligned when everything else was TDC--it was off by one notch.  I adjust the balance shaft, make the belt "sorta tight" and all problems are solved.  No belt whine and no stick vibration.

Im going back to my mechanic to "discuss" why I was the one to fix the problem. Smile

Indeed, the engine should hardly vibrate and shouldn't make any whining noises.  Finding a good mech is one thing, finding one who really knows these cars is another.
