Balance Belt Rubbing
#1

After taking off the belt covers to check the tension/tighten after a prior change the balance shaft belt has a little nick on it from the water pump. The belt we took off when originally changing the belts had the same little nick on it from the water pump. The tension on the belt and spacing on the rollers is just fine. Any ideas on what, if anything I should do?

i think rubbing issues with the balance shaft belt are usually due to the tensioner pulley (passenger side lowest) being turned the wrong way. usually you turn it clockwise to tighten the belt. maybe yours is flopped the other way raising the belt up. usually that just makes the belt constantly rub, not nick the belt. if the covers are off its easy to check that though.

I double checked and it does tighten clockwise. I assume that means it is in the correct position? I ran the car to inspect the belt while moving and it still does not touch at idle. I assume it rubs at higher rpm when the belt is under a bit more stress? I made a video but I don't know how to unpload, or if I can upload, on to here.

you should be able to slip the belt right past the flange of the water pump. see pics below:

Ya, I'm thinking its a 944 water pump, its not the same as the 968 pump pictured. The flange to timing belt distance is different between the two, its more forward on yours.

The problem is with the water pump. It's sticking out where it shouldn't be. In the straight on picture you can see how the outer lip on the water pump should be behind the belt.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like the wrong pump to be too as compared to your pictures and mine of my other cars. It has been in there for several years since my dad has not touched it since he bought the car. 4 or 5 years ago. Someone didn't know what there were doing or didn't care. Going to look at the records.

Boy is your engine clean Flash!! My dads car looks like crap compared to that!
