What option code do you have for your stereo? I have the 10 speaker setup in my cab and after doing the upgrade and having both doors completely apart, I found no "extra" wires. I'm guessing they would be for conenction of the factory 3" midrange with this option and probably would lead to the rear of the speaker enclosure under the armrest. Let me know what color(s) they are and I'll look for you.
Where are the other 2 speakers in the 10 speaker setup?

I have wondered about this as well. Inquiring minds want to know.

I only count 8 too, unless they're counting the woofer and tweeter as separates in the rear. The cabs indeed have 8 physical driver locations.
The wiring diagram shows a set of wires in each door (connection points 304, 305, 307 and 308) that are paralleled with the wiring that goes to the speakers. There is a note on the diagram indicating "not used". Passenger side should be a brown/black pair and the driver's side is a brown/white pr. If you only have a 6 speaker setup, my guess would be that the extra wires are for the 3"midrange and crossover connection(s). Silvy, you may have to pull the speaker and see if the "spare wires" are the same color as connected to your driver or use a tone generator and see if the speaker emits the tone. I'd be careful about connecting something there as it may end up putting it in parallel with the other drivers and damage your amp/head unit due to a low impedance.
Tony, I think you're right, that the cutout we're addressing is the same spot as the 4x6 in the 944, which is under our 968 tweeter location.
I've attached a pic of my driver's door...sorry for the small text.

Here is the 10 speaker set-up:
2 - full range in doors under window switches (1 per side)
2 - tweeter above window switches (1 per side)
4 - a mid range diver and bass driver in each door panel (2 per side)
2 - a full range speaker in each rear panel (1 per side)
Total equals 10.
The 8 speaker setup does not include the round one under the window switches but does include the other 8. The 6 speaker set is two tweeters above window switches, 2 in door panel and two in back panel.

yes, very odd...if you have the 3 way component setup in the doors (woofer and mid under the armrest and tweeter up high), why in the world would they add ANOTHER driver in that front 944 location? The only thing I can think is they used the same wiring for all the cars and only connected the components based on option code. I'm off to check the 944 wiring diagrams as I need to anyway to install the head unit soon.

Flash - I just replaced the two mid-range drivers in each door and can confirm that my car, which I now know has the 8 speaker setup, has 2 tweeters above the window switches (1 in each door), 2 mid-range drivers and 2 bass drivers (1 of each in each door under the armrest) and 2 full range speakers in the back panel (1 on each side). This is my coupe. The cab has the tweeters and what I think are 1 full range driver unde0 rthe arm rest on each side and 1 speaker in the back panel on each side. This is the 6 speaker setup. I hadn't seen the round speaker under the window switch until I went to Newtown. Some pics (shot with the grill on but I think are OK) are attached. If needed I will take a speaker grill off.

On the otion code list, 493 says "2 speakers on back shelf" - could this be the missing link? Kinda strange that the factory would do something like this. Would be the only thing that would make sense on how to get 10 speakers in a cab...
daryll - no - there is a 10 speaker option for cabs - travis called me and he has it in his - the rears are boxed in the cab - maybe we can coax him to share a pic
Well my cab has the 490 option and I decided it was time to get my behind in gear and get the stereo taken care of. I decided to open up everything to see what I had and what I could put in there as replacements. The rear speaker caught me by surprise as the other cab did not have these odd boxes. It did explain the highs I was hearing from there.
Here is a pic
What the hell do I put in there as a replacement??

Porsche is kinda infamous for having little oddities like that come from the factory. Sometimes they'll deviate from the norm for a 'few' cars without warning.
Also keep in mind folks that Porsche's have always been VERY customizable from the factory. Older Porsches are famous for having little things that no one knows about from the factory...

Yes they appear to be sealed and I am trying to figure out how to open it without destroying it. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I don't think anything was custom just the standard 10 speaker setup for the cab assuming they are counting that as two speakers per side in the back. I'm also assuming the 490 option meant 10 speaker. There are three in each door and those funky boxes in the back.
Right now I'm trying to find the amp that I know is out there somewhere since I have the internal amp in the head unit turned off and I still have a lot of sound coming out. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Looked under both seats and nothing there, nothing in the cubbies or the trunk.. I was hoping to do this without ripping all of the carpet up tracing wires. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I have also seen various amplifier set-ups. I have 2 amps - one under each seat. 928 part numbers.
