Engine rebuild

So I have a couple more questions about the engine I'm preparing to assemble. I have a manual for the 944S; are all the procedures and specs the same? If not, can someone point me to a place where I can find them for the 968? Mainly torque specs and sequences. What sealants are required besides loctite 574? Are the 968 specific balance shaft seals worth the extra money?

Any other tips?

the manuals are not the same. you can download the 968 manual from a link here. pay particular attention to the cam timing procedure. you will need special tools to do this, as well as to pressurize the variocam system.

Ok, couple more questions… What's the deal with the covers up inside the block on the sides of the cylinders? I took them all out and one was full of sludge, which explains where all the goop was leaking from after it came back from the machine shop… Do I put them back in? Is fresh rubber on those vital?

And after just washing the block again, it seems all the main bearings flow water at the same time when the hose was put to the oil cooler passage except for the middle bearing. I noticed that one flows to the rear balance shaft bearing, but it it supposed to have the same supply as the other main bearings? Do I need to look for a clog?

And for pressurizing the tensioner, that's just to verify the timing between the cams? The chain is still on the cams with the tensioner as it was removed from the head. Can I just match the teeth up the same when I put the new chain on?

nope - that's so you can time the cams. you have to pressurize the variocam, which then advances one of them. then you use the dial indicators to set the position of the cams.



as for the chain and teeth, there is a template in the workshop manual for that. that roughs you in. then you time the cams.

The empty block is on the stand right now. If you rotate it so the main bearings are up (the bottom of the engine) and look down into the block, on either side of each cylinder is one or two plates with a bolt holding each one in. There are six total. 1 and 4 only have one each, while 2 and 3 have a plate on either side of them.

If the part numbers are different, I would only use the ones specified for the 968. I think it was in the 90's that we started using a lot of Viton for seals on machinery to combat the attach of synthetic fluids on the older materials used for seals. It could be something as simple as a material difference. It isn't worth the risk for any difference in price for 968 specific seals. You won't want to have to get back in there to take care of a leak.

I pulled it out of a 92 968. Date year on everything is 91.

well, the manual does not show those on the 968. the PET does not show those on the 968. i've never seen them.



they are on the 944 blocks though.



i suppose it's possible that it was a very early 92, which may have used an S2 block. it would be interesting to see if that is the case. it would also be interesting to see if you have the oil squirters that were added on the 968.

Those were definitely not in my block, either (until you posted the picture, I had no clue what you were talking about, either). Mine's a 92 as well.



Up until this moment, I had always thought the 968 was the only model in the 924/944/951/968 line with a 3.0l engine, but I just discovered that the 944 S2 also had one. I always thought it was a 2.5 or 2.7l. Learn something new every day on this here forum...
