Hello.

 

Last December I took the car to the mechanic and got the brakes and clutch bled.  After picking it up and turning it on I thought I heard a clicking sound coming from the engine.  The shop was closed so I drove it back to the garage and left it for winter.  To keep the tires in shape, I went every 10-14 days and drove some laps around the parking garage.  Several times over the last couple of months I've been hearing the clicking again.

Today I took the car out for spring and after about 5 minutes of driving the clicking went away.  Left the car parked and came back four-five hours later and when starting the clicking wasn't there (though an accessory belt screeched presumably as it was slipping).

 

Could this be the same phenomenon described in this thread (http://www.968forums.com/topic/4581-tapp...entry42772) that the lifters are in disuse, or could this be a more serious problem?  I'm not losing oil and the dipstick has been a solid 85% between min and max every time I've checked over the winter.

The ball non-return valve in the lifters is either worn or dirty, there is no sure way of cleaning or fixing them, I have used Wynns lifter cleaner in the past but with dubious success.


Porsche no longer make the lifters but buy them in from INA, I have heard and read stories that these INA lifters only last about 10-15k?


Mine clattered quite badly when I restarted the car after two months took the best part of 15 mins to shut up, went up in oil grade and not had the problem back.

Also used Wynns, it was pretty successful. Only in winter -when the car sits for about a week or 2- sometimes the ticking comes back, but only for a minute or so.

Definitely worth a try. I should have done it when my cams were out. Are you far away from pads and cam chain?

Last Saturday i replaced all of my lifters. 16 of them with brand new one's. Porsche sell them for about 56 dollars. I found an replacement for 60 euros for 16 of them. The lifters off an audi a100 will fit. The only difference is that the length of the lifter is .5 mm longer but that has no effect . Running the car gives a lot more bottom power. It is quiet and very smooth.

Good video...I had no idea there was so much to a lifter.

Me neither Ryan, but apparently a bit of patience and carefully cleaning could bring them back to life. Now I know what to do when and if my head gasket needs to be replaced.

first of all best wishes Waylander.

In according to the videoclip there is one problem when you open an Original lifter of a 968. You can not open the inside with the small ball. This because you have to crack a circlip.

so you can not pull them back together and think it will work without any problem for the rest of its life.

 

 

I looked around for a long time and have measured all the details from the 968 lifter that I had spare and adfter some time I found out that the --- "same " --- lifter was used in an Audi.

 

two small differences. first the total length is 0,5 mm longer.

second there is a groove that the Original lifter does not have. But the lifters used in a 928 has them too. So there should be no problem with getting the oil inside ther. Even better with an extra groove.

the  mass of the new lifters are the same.

 

The working range of the lifter to clear the valveclearence is equal to the Porsche lifter.

 

I order a set of 20 so I opened two of the new lifters to measure them before I concluded that I would mounted them in the 968.

 

After mounting I started the car and it is running smooth quiet and without that tapping noise after 24 years of collecting dirt in the old lifters.

 

now I can start the car and turn it off when it is still cold. Before I Always had one of the lifters that after a second cold start would tap till the engine was warm,

running the engine gives you more torque I noticed in the lower range. I think the valves are opening much more and better because the new lifters does not loose there oil.

Well to the sadness and deep disappointment to all I have survived this ordeal


The blood supply to the left hand side of my heart was blocked almost completely (you need to make sure those drains are cleared)


Had to have two stents fitted to re open the blocked artery in doing this while you are wide awake and watching on your own screen is amazing, even though fitting the first one block the flow completely and caused me to have a small arrest there and then, it was like being kicked by a horse


Feeling a little battered and bruised but on the mend

Glad to hear the important valves are now in good order and ticking correctly...the clicking ones are just a tad less critical :-).

p,s. - had we known earlier about this mishap, flash could have developed some modified D1R stents for you..
