2 questions

brian- is your car a 92? that might explain the cover clearance - 92s used a different intake manifold that mounts the vanity cover slightly differently

john - the pic showing the brace in your car shows zero clearance - do you have a worn cover and bar now as i do? it seems my engine does enough left to right to really tear that thing up - i am wondering if i have weak mounts, even though they sit high

That pic was taken before you showed me the trick of pushing the cover over and down while installing it. I do have wear there, but from my mechanic's not knowing about that.

Well, here's what it looks like now, but it doesn't mean much: I don't always have the cover adjusted optimally.

are you making contact at all now? that looks like about the same amount as me - i painted mine black, and it will rub the paint off - .030 more and i swear i'd clear - just trying to see if i have more side to side than i should

i may be able to get there with some modification to the cover

or, before you install the letters, take them to the Caribbean, teach them how to do the limbo, and you'll have no problem clearing that KLA bar <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

as soon as they confirm the new letters are ready, I'm placing my order.

ditto on the appreciation to John for sending them the cover !!

flash, I'm sorry: I'm just not tracking this that closely. As I mentioned there was rubbing in the past where my mechanics didn't know to put the cover in place so carefully, so it's all kind of academic to me at this point. Sorry I can't be more help.

no worries - was just hoping for some extra input - i may just swap out the mounts anyway - would give me an excuse to install the lindsey cross member

couldn't you tell if you watch the engine as you're revving by hand ? I imagine any weak motor mount would allow it to lift a little on one side or the other as you do that.. if both are weak, I doubt the entire engine would rise to touch the bar, but it would vibrate enough to let you know of the weakness... I'm guesing <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

it moves a little, but not much - can't fire it up right now to measure though - up on stands and about to yank wires, injectors, coil, yada yada

i'll check it when i get it all back together

I assume you guys have seen the Racing Dynamics strut bars. They say they do not have one for 968s, but I think they have the best looking solution I have seen, if they are rigid enough.

Well, we are thoroughly highjacked at this point, eh? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Something else OT that doesn't fit the 968. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Got my cover back today with a complimentary set of letters <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> , which I requested in black.

That "H" is a pain: you heat the cover and trim pieces before installing them, and the "H" kept flipping around under wind from the heat gun. In the end I installed it upside-down. I am letting the adhesive set a bit before I install the cover (every once in a while I hit the back of the cover with my heat gun), and I may wait until I receive an ignition wire set I ordered in the mass feeding frenzy (Paragon tell me they've sold more 968 ignition wire sets in the last two weeks than they usually do in a year...)

This is my original cover: some mechanic or perhaps a friend of my teenage kids scratched the letter "C" with something sharp, so I put in a newer cover a year or so ago. I've never been happy with it because it isn't painted (the original cover is) and the metal discolors. So I'm happy to have these letters to cover up that vandalism and go back to the original appearance.

Heat gun needed <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ?! I thought the letters came with a peel off, stick on strong adhesive backing which did not require anything else... with the engine heat providing the final sealing touch.. Would a hair dryer set to HOT work ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

So, did they indicate when they might be ready to stock the new letters so the rest of us can start ordering ?

and where did you source the new cover, and how much was it? i will need to replace mine when i do this after working out the height issue

also, can you take a shot with a coin along side the letter for height reference?

DS968:

The installation instructions are detailed and specific.

Mention is made a few times about heating both the trim and what it's to be mounted on. I think they use that 3M heavy-duty mounting tape: the dark grey stuff with the red plastic release backing. Although you don't have to use a heat gun, I would recommend it. They come in very handy for so many things anyhow...

I have not heard anything about shipping time for other sets, sorry.

Flash:

I bought it from Sunset- it cost $61.00. The lettering protrudes the height of a penny.

My cover is discolored in places and I can't clean it. Can it just be painted? What should I use?

Thanks,

Jeff
