Electrical Gremlins Indeed
#1

Would appreciate the thoughts from this league of extraordinary gentleman...

Have had this problem for a couple months now...

Noticed my beloved 968 starting to run a little warm ( was always on the lowest temp mark on the guage - it was struggling to start (slow grind) - and and the volts were a little low...went to start one day and "click, click"...I thought starter - took it to a local starter shop - they said - no - and rebuilt the alternator - and put in new battery...

Runs fine for two weeks - take it out for a cruise - again noticed volts down a little and running warm - hang out for a couple of hours - go to start - click, click - got car jumped - still struggled to start - but did start...

Few days later - go to start car - fires right up - runs like a champ...

Couple weeks later - out for a cruise - car sits for a couple minutes - click, click - jump to start...check 968 Forums - change DME relay - car fires right up...

Few days later - car in garage at home - car will turn over - won't fire...

Tow car to European Performance in Raleigh NC - I think pretty good PM's - they said cables were loose over near the alternator - they put the car under loads and stress - took it out for a spin - can't get the car to run warm and volts look fine...couldn't duplicate the low volts and run warm...

Car home from shop - I go out for numerous trips - runs like a champ for 3 weeks...

Take a spin this am - notice running warm again and volts down...buy some parts for changing oil for wife's car - 5 mins - come out...click click...try to jump - car will turn -over but won't fire - change DEM relay - won't fire...come back two hours later - car fires right up - drive it home - volts low and runs warm...

Will take it back to EP -...wife says "sell car" - never gonna happen...thanks for any thoughts and ideas - I'm very impressed with the knowledge and willingness to help on this Forum...

Wife says " sell car " ?!! Sell wife, keep car :-) :-)

No idea what it could be ..however , my 944s would ALWAYS run very warm and with low voltage in the rain and never had that same problem in dry weather. Neither the dealer nor the PM had an explanation for what could possibly cause that. I have not driven the 968 in rainy days ( all three or four of them we have in any given year in California.. ) so not sure if it would exhibit similar symptoms, but if these cars have the same damp atmosphere electrical gremlins as my 944s did it could be one of the factors . Are you driving it when raining and noticing that symptom ?

Get a new positive/negative cable kit from higher connections. I bet your cables are in poor shape.

Sounds to me like a loose cable and/or a bad ground.

There was a thread about frayed wires around the starter recently, wondering if there is some kind of short going on. Doesn't sound like a dme relay issue as that is fuel related and this clearly sounds like electrical.

Thanks for the info - very much appreciated - ds - it really doesn't seem to be damp or rainy when this happens...agree - can replace wives easier than 968...:-)

yup - almost certainly a cabling/connection problem. this can be VERY dangerous and/or expensive if left unaddressed.

the common culprit is the cables at the starter. you can't see how bad they are without peeling back the jacket that covers them. the insulation on each wire is well known for shrinking and causing a short.

the battery cables also are well known for creating problems. be sure the connections are clean and tight. also be sure the main ground connection at the body by the battery is clean and tight.

As cables get hot the resistance in the cable increases. So if you have less then optimal cables, like you do right now, you will get those hot start issues.

There may be an easier way to tell if your alternator-to-starter cable has deteriorated. Look down behind the alternator, and there may be 2-4 inches of bare, exposed copper if the insulation has given up the ghost.

I agree with the battery cable suggestion. My son had the exact same problem. We cut off 2-3in of the positive cable on the battery side (corrosion seeps in between the wire strands like you wouldn't believe - it's like the cable wicks it up) and put on a new connector. No issues since - that was over a year ago.

Thanks again to all for the replies - I'll collect the notes and be off to European Performance for hopefully "the fix"...

Hi Guys, having sorted my alarm issue (until the next time) I need to redo some of the wiring.  I cannot locate (PelicanParts, Paragon, Design911) the pin extractor/insert tool for the male/female pins below, and I think it is the same tool for the connector on my cruise control actuator which I also wish to tidy up.

Anyone have a part number for the appropriate tool or an accurate description/term for it so I can order it??  Thanks

Hi Roboman,

Looks like 94461243500 Connector Housing (+94461242700 contact bush), but this is for 3 wires.

Looks like yours is for 2 wires?

Probably Waylander knows which one you need.

Hi J, thanks but it is the tool for extracting/inserting the pins that I need, not the plug/socket itself...... I'm assuming the tool exists!!

I have never seen a tool for doing these plugs, not even sure how to describe it in a search, if you do find it it might be expensive like the tool for the spark plug leads, £250
