crazy electrical clicking noises
#1

So driving today i was hearing what I first thought was just a plastic squeak from being and under my gauges seems to be something much more because as i stopped i could still hear it, i think turned off my car and it continued for another 15 sec or so. It is a verysporadic Electrical clicking noise. Anyone have this problem? Its a 1992 968 coupe fyi.

Combined with the odometer not working it could be the small stepper motor (or IC converting the input signal to this motor) inside the instrument cluster driving the odometer gear has failed. Or the gear itself has failed making it hard for the stepper motor to turn. However this should stop if you turn of the car.

I just got my 968 last Saturday so i am familiar with almost nothing on the car. You said it should stop if the car is off but i noticed my windows will go up and down even if the car is off. Is this normal?

the windows will go up or down once after turning off the key.

i agree the noise is likely in the guage

Is there a post on here you could point me to for fixing that then?

Well actually i assume power to the instrument cluster is off when you switch off the ignition and remove the key.

One other thing you may try is open the fuse box under the hood/bonnet and listen for the clicking sound with the enigine running or off. The bottom of the fuse box has a open connection to the area under the dash/instrument cluster. This would not explain the odometer (which could just be the very common broken gear,do a search) but maybe the clicking is just a faulty relay in the box.

And since you are new to the 968....never press the odo reset while the car is moving. This can cause the gear to break. Reset when the car is stationary only.

actually, that one is more than likely a myth, carried over from the 944, but as a safety, i still don't push it while moving.

the 944 tripmeter reset was a mechanical button. ours is electrical. it won't do anything with the key off. that being said, i suppose if the gears are turning, even if you push an electrical button, something might get unhappy in there. the gear itself is very tiny and very fragile.

no myth . happened with my 968. twice ! ( and yes, you'd think after spending $ 250+ ( IIRC ) to have it fixed the first time I did that, I would never forget to never push that damn thing while the car is moving ) but guess what.. and only about a year later.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/whine.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . the folks at palo alto speedometer really like customers like me . however after the second $ 250 I will now never, ever, ever...

The only time I had the odo break on either my 944 or the 968 was when I reset the 968 odo on the fly.

i've got a spare, and i'm going to play with it, but there is no mechanical connection between the reset button and the tripmeter. not sure why it would break, unless there is some crazy preload on the gear, and hitting the button while it is moving causes the teeth to continue to move, and then get stuck and snap.

unhappy relay. see if you can identify something that is not working properly. check all of your lights. see if your fans run on both low and high speeds, and that they do not "cycle" on and off.

my left blinker likes to go really fast or really slow. Also my mph gauge doesn't work. Besides that i haven't noticed anything

Maybe you could pull a relay and then put it back if the clicking does not stop? If you repeat this for all of them, I guess you should be able to determine the faulty one.
