Trivia question: multiple electrical things went dead
#1

Ok, so I haven't debugged this yet at all.  But......here are the known symptoms:
  • The Tiptronic gear indicator lights on the tach are dark, never light up.
  • The clock stopped.
  • The temp indicator only displays in celsius.  Hitting the F button still leaves in in celsius!!
Huh?  What is the root cause?  How are these things related?   I can probably trace it down, everything else appears fine, but since this was such an odd combination, I thought it might make a nice trivia question so we can all exercise our desire for more and more understanding of these cars.

Winner gets:    ..... probably a $5.00 gift certificate to Design 1 Racing or .... I can offer free marriage advice.   Rock

Back story:  I lent the 968 to my nephew who visited from Germany for 2 weeks with his girlfriend.  And they drove it all around San Diego (lots) and nothing ever went wrong with it, and I found this after they left.  Now some may say that is really not so wise, to lend you beloved 968 to people in their 20s.  But I'll have to admit I felt so good about doing this, they got a huge treat, nobody ever let me borrow their Porsche, and they would never have an opportunity like this.  I am sure they didn't do anything wrong, just something failed along the way.   It was pretty cool to share the Porsche experience, its the right thing to do.

Generally, I would say fuses.

Did something get wet (maybe they washed the car for you, because you are so kind and generous)?

In case I'm right...how do I convince my wife that I NEED a Cayman in addition to my 968?

Fuse 11.

Also your 12v lighter is out. Might be a clue to what happened. Smile

Mike wins!   Replaced it already.  Thanks.  I'm gonna have to find harder trivia questions for you guys.

Jay, there are only 2 truths in this world:  1. the universe is infinite, and 2.  never ask Roland for marriage advice.   (hint:  suggest to her a Vanagon, preferably a Syncro, my wife loves ours).

Now back to some harder trivia:  In the movie "The Specialist" where James Woods drives the 968, exactly how many kilometers does he drive it in the movie?

Weird that at right about the same time as these posts , my MBZ exhibited a similar symptom ; I started the car one morning and the LED instrument display did not come on, the power windows did not work, the fan blower ( heat , vent or AC ) did not work, the blinkers did not work, but the headlights were ok, the radio was perfectly fine, and the car was drivable . I first thought it must be a fuse, but puzzled that a single fuse, or relay, could control all those things which seem quite unrelated. Got out of the car, checked the fuse box but did not see anything wrong, so I decided to drive closer to the garage to check it further later in the day. However, when I started it again, all the functions came back on ! Still trying to figure out what kind of gremlin could possibly cause that ?! A sudden drop in battery voltage right after starting the car, maybe ? Just posting this in case anyone experiences this with the 968s, although I don't have a solution ..yet .

A year or two ago, I replaced all the fuses in my cars with new ones that light up when blown...it also was an opportunity to make sure they were all the correct amps (some weren't ).

It makes figuring out if a blown fuse is the problem so much easier to diagnose...because once in a while a visual inspection of the fuses just isn't enough
