High Beams Inop and minor electrical issues
#1

Hi all,

1992 Porsche 968 Tip

In short my high beams to not work with the fog light housings plugged in. When they are both unplugged, the high beams work just fine. Based on this I do not think it is the switch. When one or both of the fog light housings plugged in, my high beams do not work. Fog lights work, but high beams do not. I swapped each housing out one at a time with a 95 968 (gotta love having a friend with the same car) and they each worked just fine. I also swapped one at a time each relay I could find (4 total including the double relay) with the relays from his car and they did not make a difference. So, I have ruled out relays, switch, fog light housings, and headlight bulbs (I just changed those also). I really have no clue what could be causing this. The wiring/connectors for the fog light housings and the headlights all looked good with no rubbing or hacking into at all. Luckily high beams are not a make it or break it thing for being able to drive it. Any ideas?

Also, my hatch button does not work unless the key is in the 1 or 2 position. On my buddies 95 it works at all times, and it also worked that way on an 84 944 I had. Any ideas?

Oh, and do the red lights go bad in the lock switch? My locks work fine with and also work with the key in the doors, but the red light doesn't come on when I lock them. The lights do flash on the doors, though.

One last thing, I am needing bulbs for the clock and for the LCD temp gauge, anyone have any idea what they take and where to get them?

Thanks a ton in advance, I am slowing getting this car back into great shape.

Have no clue about the high beam issue, but wonder, do the high beams in the headlights themselves work? Or is it just the high beams in the bumper?

My hatch button is live all the time, so it does sound as if you have an issue. Perhaps someone has dealt with the question before.

What are you referring to when you mention the red lights in the lock switch? Do you mean the central locking switch on the center console panel?

As far as the LCD temp gauge, if you have no numbers, your unit has likely failed. You will have to scour to find one and might get lucky on eBay. My local dealer looked and said they are not in production and cannot be ordered. The most common failure for these is the gauge will only read in Centigrade. And.....if you wear polarized sunglasses while driving, the readout disappears unless you tilt your head to the side. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/glare.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Best of luck on getting the gremlins out!

About the lock switch, I am talking about the one on the center console.

About the temp gauge, it works during the day but not at night. That is why I need a bulb for it.

I have a spare temp gauge unit at home and will look to see if there is a bulb, but as I recall it's a sealed unit. Will post back with what I find.

You have to take the unit apart to get to the bulb. It is soldered in (ugh). I know because I destroyed one trying to open it up to understand how to fix mine. Luckily it was a bad one that I picked up cheap at Oklahoma Foreign.

Is this regarding the LCD temp or the lock switch?

I have had to remove my headlight switch and clean it with contact cleaner because my fog lights did not work. If I recall correctly, most of your exterior lights are routed though that switch. The contact pins were tend to oxydize. Do you hear the relay click when you turn on your high beams? If so, you only need to troubleshoot beyond the relay.

I've also replaced one led knob for the door locks. They should blink slowly. I'd check power to them.

I'd print out a copy of the wiring and highlight the circuits of interest. Then test votage along the way. Helping fix electrical issues is tough over the forums.

I have replaced the clock and the LCD temp gauge bulb. The clock bulb is a standard part at Automotion, Paragon, Pelican. I don't remember anything spacial about the LCD temp but I did fix it as it was burnt out and was unreadable at night; I may have soldered a new bulb in.
