Still fighting electrical gremlins
#1

Gentlemen:

I'm still fighting my ongoing electrical situations with my '92 coupe. Latest happening while I was out for a drive and it started to rain. Attempted to turn on the windshield wipers. Well, discovered that I had no front or rear wipers, headlights or fan(AC). But I could close the windows and the sunroof as well as the radio and operate the hatch.

On previous random occasions it seemed that I could get these systems to operate by shutting the car off, waiting a few minutes(1 or 2)and restarting and everything was operational. Not this time so I got the car home and began trouble shooting. I have cleaned all of the ground points at least three times so all are rust and corrosion free. Checked the DME relay with spares with no apparent difference.

I discovered, by accident(of course) that with the key in position #1 and #2(prior to starter engaging) I would get all systems working properly but once I moved the key to engage the starter - no fan, no headlights and no wipers. Then with the car idling if I wiggled the ignition key(master key)all systems operated correctly. I then tried the other two factory keys supplied with the car(round top keys). One seemed to work correctly while the other behaves like the master key.

Questions:

Anybody else experience this?

Is this a result of a 19 year old ignition switch or worn keys or both?

Is there a proceedure for removing the ignition switch?

Thanks guys, looking for help and or suggestions.

Check clark's garage for help in r and r.

Thanks for responding Brian. I did check Clark's and his r&r is on his 924 and looks very involved almost to the point of too much. I was looking for something more recent like a 944 or maybe even a 968.

it is incredibly likely that contacts are just plain dirty

use contact cleaner on the ignition switch

remove all fuses and relays one by one and use contact cleaner on all contacts and also clean them with a wire brush - be sure not to leave any wires behind

allow contact cleaner to dry before turning the ignition key

My PM tells me that if the switch feels sloppy, then it is possible that it needs replacing, if not, I agree with flash, that cleaning may be the problem.

As cleaning involves removal, I would have a new switch standing by. If cleaning works, you could always return the switch. It should not be a special order item. My PM got one in a day for between $60 and $100.

Good time to consider a nice new steering wheel!

Hi Carl, A few links to see what you are dealing with and how to replace the Ignition Switch Module, the Key Part and remove the Ignition Assembly. It sounds as if the internals are shot in the Ignition Switch Module and shorting out.

I had to remove the Instrument Gage Panel as I don't bend like I used to be able to do. The Gage Cluster Trim has two hidden screws, one above and one below the Trip Reset Button at the vent edge. Be careful as the plastic is brittle from heat and age.

I got the inspection mirror out and looked at the back side of the Electrical Switch Module. There is a plug with all the wires that has to be pulled off the module, got that pulled (careful you don't pull out the wires) and there are two screws holding the module to the Ignition Assembly. Long story short. I broke off the handle on my shortest stubby screw driver, used a SHORT long nose vise grip and was able to turn out the screw next to the steering shaft. The other screw was a snap. I plugged in the new Ignition Module, used a cross point screw driver to turn to start and WOW the engine started. I then installed the module to the Ignition Assembly. While the gage cluster was out I replaced all the light bulbs. I hope this helps if you have to use it. The link below gives the module wire lay out for the plug. The second link will show what the Ignition Assembly looks like and the third where to drill to release the Ignition Key Lock. Use Clark's Garage.com for late dash removal to remove the steering wheel, dash plastic trims and the Instrument Gages.

Really guys -- thanks for the great response. I'm in the process of doing the steps involved with these suggestions and will keep posting on the results.

This is by far the best 968 site that there is. Thanks to everybody for their efforts to make it that way
