I'm starting this theme because of its specific nature, and may save others from a future catastrophe .... WARNING, some people may find these scenes disturbing
After doing some work underneath the front bumper, new lower grill and an few other things, I nipped off to the local garage where, on arrival my 968 was found to be smokin' ! Unfortunately I don't mean this was a positive experience where the assembled crowd couldn't take their eyes of my ride, I mean there was smoke coming from under the bonnet/hood
It turned out the the alarm wires had shorted so I turned off the ignition and disconnected the plug/socket. The result of the short was fuse 24 (30A) blows immediately and so there were no wipers.
Page 3 of the wiring diagram shows the Bk/Ye feed from fuse 24 to power the wipers also diverts to the front of the hood, my major concern was the shorted wires may have melted up through the loom
So I removed the front bumper (thanks Flash for the guidance) and so expose the melted alarm wiring as it disappeared into the loom.
Top left - you can see the emergency bonnet release and the melted alarm wiring going through the same grommet. (I remember moving that hood cable around several times whilst replacing the grill and my assessment of the situation is that the rough cable cut through the old alarm wiring.)
Bottom - I opened up the loom to follow the melted cable, fortunately it didn't go too far.
Top right - having replaced the melted wiring I covered them with heat shrink, also sleeved the metal cable with heat shrink, passed them through the grommet and added a little grease.
I'm happy to say my wipers now work just fine, though I still need to investigate the alarm wiring for any other damage. But for now, the car seems to work just fine.
SO MY QUESTION IS .... does everyone's bonnet pull and alarm wires share the same grommet, or is there some other routing which has been changed on mine??
If the answer to the above is that the all go through the same grommet, then I suggest this is a potential failure point and all should check their's to head off what happened to me.
I have some answers to other related questions about fault finding wiper problem which I shall put in a different post. I hope the above helps.
