CAB ROLL BAR

good timing - yes

i got a chance to go down there yesterday and check fit the new version in my car - fits like a glove - it seems jim's problem was in shipping (again, sorry jim - please keep us apprised on anything we need to do on the greyhound claim)

we have the new hardware worked out - the instructions are written - i think we have worked out how to avoid further damage in shipping

the shop is finishing the units now and i see no reason that all of them won't ship next week

well, we started at noon, and it was a long day, but a lot of fun - eric, dj, mark (all the way from the bay area), and bill came over with their cars - everybody jumped in and we went to work

we successfully installed units in all 4 cars - this was a good thing to do, and i'm glad we did it - i found a couple of things i can change to make the install better and easier, and we learned some very interesting things about the way these cars were built - they are not all the same!

as expected, it appears that flex causes the chassis to misalign - some of this was fairly easy to accommodate

also, the lower seat belt mounting points appear to be an almost semi random location - that is to say, there is a considerable amount of variance in their locations - we measured this to be sure we weren;t loosing our minds - sure enough - they vary from car to car - this makes a certain amount of sense, since the belt is adjustable, and therefore does not really matter, within reason, where it is put - however, the location varied enough from car to car to make it tought to install on a couple of them

one required 3 guys pushing to get it to line up - one took a little persuasion, one, just a little patience, and one went in like a dream

eric's car took us a while, but i knew that one was going to be the toughest, so we did it first - it fought us, but we got it - eric's was the higest mileage car

dj's car was again an archeology expedition - it appears he had some serious a/v gear in there at one point - the wiring for the stereo was in the way of where the unit wanted to go, so we had to dig in and remove wiring - we found the oddest things in there

the sun went down, but we were on a roll - 2 down and 2 to go - time for bill's car - notice the color combination - wow!!! - i never knew his top was camel - very cool - his went in like butter, and was the lowest mileage car

last but not least, mark's horizon blue (i still love that color)

so, now you've got your new "fuzzy dice hanger" installed - now what are you going to do?

"I'm going to Disneyland!!!"

in the end, they all got installed, and all was good - i will be implementing a couple of minor changes midstream to accommodate the differences, so as to make it easier - there should be no delay as a result

eric and dj had to leave early, but about 7 we finally finished the last car and those who were still here stuck around for a bbq - it was a great time, and i really enjoyed it - everybody, thanks for helping, and enjoy the "fuzzy dice hanger"

lol - no, sorry - no ideo - actually that one was one of the easier ones - perhaps i should have said minor coaxing? - we were pretty tired by that point, and the idea of what to do came late

but, it was realy good that some of these gave me grief - now i can head those problems off with a few revisions - i'll phone them in today so they make the next batch - i won't be able to personally install the rest, so i need the instructions and install to be easy

Must say, an amazing rol...ugh, fuzzy dice holder. Really is a work of art. EVERYTHING was taken into consideration. Best part about it is the cowl shake is all but gone. You can feel the added rigidity in the chassis. Thanks Bob for all your hard work, I would have paid much more

Flash, many thanks for the install workshop you hosted. The fuzzy dice/chassis stiffener is a work of art and the updates should only make it better. A custom bar that doesn't interfere with the top and allows seat movement is well worth the price. In fact, it is a significant bargain because of your many hours of design and production consulting that are not reflected in the final costs.

I highly suggest that a cab shouldn't be driven without one. After seeing several rollover accidents on the freeway, I can see that many driving conditions are not within the control of the driver. The chassis stiffener will help mitigate rollover risks (however no device can guarantee complete safety).

The hood realignment was a great side-bonus (This is not part of the installation process...Flash did this because he couldn't stand to see mis-aligned body gaps). I could see that you must of done the hood realignment on many other cars because it didn't take very long.

Thanks again!

Mark

I totally agree. I drove 400 miles after the install. The rigidity can be felt pretty quickly, and my observations are from normal freeway driving and lane changing (I-5 at 85 mph). It's a good feeling, as in wow, I didn't think the chassis had that much flex, yet it doesn't seem to adversely impact the quality of the ride. It would be interesting to see the results on an AutoX course with both the the chassis stiffener and a strut brace.

glad to hear your experience was the same as others - it has made the car more fun - and i'm not done stiffening this chassis up yet - there are a couple of other projects in the hopper - when i am done, i fully expect this car to be every bit as stiff as a hardtop, and no heavier

it's very possible - it would have been way too expensive for the factory to have done it, but on a limited production basis, for those who want to spend the money, it's a no brainer - some stuff is easy and cheap - the last bit though, will be a lot harder, and require a real commitment on the part of the owner, to keeping the car, as it will not be easy or particularly cheap, and it will be a permanent serious mod that would likely affect resale for anyone looking for originality

Bob,

A belated thanks to you for all of the engineering and hard work you contributed to the design and installation of our chassis braces. It is amazing how much more solid the car feels with the brace; no more flexi-flyer. It feels as solid as a coupe with the advantage of a drop top.

Thanks, also, to Eric, Mark and DJ for their help.

Bob,

Don't forget your friends in the North-East!

There is no rush, but it would be nice to get the bar/stiffener before Xmas and to install it over the holidays. BTW, thanks for taking care to simplify the installation. There is always a chance to find some unexpected variances in my car and there won't be a team of 968 owners to bail me out.

yup - that's why i'm doing it - after installing it in a few cars, i made the decision - it's working out - i'm down for my final fit check tomorrow morning - then the last units can get completed - everybody wants these done before xmas, including the shop, so i think that's gonna happen without any difficulty
