Brake ! warning light randomly comes on
#21

You'll probably have to take the ABS sensors off to clean them. They are magnetic and tend to attract metal filings. Blowing air on them probably won't do much.

I can see how some brake pads would be worse than others at gumming up the ABS sensors.

Does your ABS work. Have you slammed the brakes on hard on a wet or gravel road to see if the ABS reacts?

I have a constant ABS light and no speedo and I tested the ABS on gravel and the wheels locked up so ABS is not working on mine for sure!

psSad thank you for the help with my car, this thread has been very helpful )

After sitting for over a year, my "new" Tip Coupe did the same thing.....it turned out to be the ABS relay. Pretty sure the speedo gets its signal from the drivers front wheel ABS sensor, so if you're planning on tearing stuff apart, I'd start at that corner.

Ok, so a couple more questions if I may. Photo below is from the PET, drawing 605-00 showing the ABS components:
  1. There is a relay shown here (item 10) is part number 928-618-931-01 (two alternative numbers shown). But the relay in the fuse box is part number 928 615 124 01. So are there 2 relays? And when you mentioned changing the relay is that the one in the fuse box? Has anyone changed this other relay and where is it?

  2. Where is the ABS equipment, I suspect under the right front fender skirt? Or is any of this equipment, including the "other relay" down in the passenger footwell?

Thank you! (sorry if I am being anal with the details, but really asking for guidance before I start jacking up the car and taking things apart).

The pump is in the passenger front wheel well, behind the plastic liner. The "brain" is behind the glove box.

To add some info for the next guy:  it was the ABS relay with the failure.  A while ago I removed the relay and benched tested, and it passed.  But obviously it was intermittent, perhaps vibration or temperature sensitive.    So make sure to check the relay as one of the first things, a bit expensive, but worth it to fully eliminate it as the source of the problem.
