Helicoil problem with brake caliper bolt
#1

When remounting the right rear brake caliper, the lower mounting bolt would not thread into the aluminum suspension member (trailing arm?). Closer inspection revealed a small length of the steel helicoil thread had pulled slightly away from the aluminum. Can this small length (about 1/8 in.) be cut off without damaging the aluminum suspension? Any way to press in on the bolt head to get the thread back in place long enough to reach the next thread?

Or do i need to replace the helicoil? I have no experience with helicoils and the risk of buggering up the trailing arm seems high.

Thanks to all!

You should be able to trim off a small amount without worrying

Just dont forget the spacer washers, you could chamfer the nose of the bolt slightly to help get it started

Use a torque wrench on the bolts, lots of mechanics tend to get a bit excited on calliper bolts

Thanks Waylander. A short application of a Dremel burr and a twist with needle nose pliers did the trick.
