brake help
#1

i've been rebuilding my calipers this week. i'm making good progress, but need some advice from the experts.

first and easiest... my bleeders are looking pretty rough. my caps need to be replaced as well. if i need new ones, do you recommend the speed bleeders? they're actually cheaper than the other kind from what i can tell.

second... the metal guide plates that screw into the caliper and go on each end of the pad - i wanted to remove them to do a real thorough cleaning job, but just can't get those things off. i think they're rusted on. i haven't stripped the allen heads yet, but i'm sure i would at this point. i don't feel the need to remove them, but it would be nice at this point to make sure i've touched all the bases before putting the brakes back together. plus i think i may have to remove them because...

third and finally... after doing a very thorough cleaning job of the outsides of the calipers (there was all kinds of green goo caked on them!) some of the paint is starting to come off of the caliper. i think it's mostly just clear coat and for the most part, it's not much. but i'm wondring if need to refinish/paint the calipers now? are they going to rust? anyone ever repaint a caliper? what's involved if i need to do this? this may sound really stupid, but i'd hate to paint over the "porsche" on the caliper. i think it looks cool and i'm not a good enough painter to hand paint the letters back on.

The allen bolts that hold the plates on are loctited and won't come out unless you heat them with a torch or equivalent.

The clear coat flaking is mostly a cosmetic issue. You could have them powder coated to look new again and there are Porsche brake decals out there.

Bruce Ward or some one had posted a link to a brake rebuilding guide. Try searching for it here or the 968.net forums.
