rotor questions
#1

So about 8 months ago I had new brakes and rotors put on the front. When I got the car back I noticed the new rotors were kind of rusted. Didn't think anything of this at the time. Now I'm wondering if I didn't really get new rotors, they just turned some old ones maybe? Any thoughts on this?

Also, I just jacked the car up and spun the wheels. It sounds like the brake pad or something is rubbing just slightly. (There is a very light squeek as the wheel turns) Is this normal, or are the brakes messed up somehow? Again, both the pads and the rotors are about 8 months old.

And finally: When I run my finger across the area on the rotor where the brake pad grips the wheel, I can feel a bunch of ridges. Should that area be smooth? And on the rear wheels (where I haven't had any work done) it is slightly ridged, but the last millimeter on the outside of the wheel sticks way up, like the pad has ground down the rotor so much but doesn't make contact on the very outside.

Should any of this be a concern?

Thanks!

Mark

Light flash rust on the rotors is normal. Have you ever looked at yours after washing the wheels? They are cast iron, they love to rust. Thick fluffy rust is an indication that they sat in moisture for a long time.

Light brake drag is also normal. The big question is do you feel a pedal pulse or feedback through the steering wheel on braking? If so, the runout may be too great and you need to have the rotors turned. Ridges are a normal part of wear. Some pads are more prone to carving ridges than others. Grit from the road can get embedded in the pads and cause grooving. At the very least, next pad change, have the rotors turned.

No pulsing when braking, so it sounds like all is well. My rust question was mostly because the back (old) rotors don't have rust on them. They kind of have a bluish/silverish color to them. So I figured since the front ones are new, they should be nice and shiny or something <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Thanks for the info Dave!

Mark, where is the rust? If on the "hats" portion of the rotor (the portion that stands proud of the actual disc) - the non-OEM rotors are usually not painted (OEM rotors are) in that area, so they do rust. The vented edge of the rotor will always rust.

If you are still a little suspicious, the best thing to do is to measure the disc thickness and compare to the OEM specs.
