Quick Power Steering questions
#1

Nasty noises led me to check the power steering fluid reservoir. It seems low.

Do the two grooves on the stick represent High and Low as per the manual?

Any preferences on fluid?

Can you mix different brands?

Is it normal for the fluid to be consumed over time or does a low reservoir indicate a leak? (There is no obvious leak that I can see)

968 Forums process:

Step 1 - post question

Step 2 - use search function <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Previous posts answered some of the questions but there seems to be some confusion about II or III - manual says II so I'll go with that.

Big question remains - sign of leak or just another consumable over time? I have not drained and filled in the 21k I have owned the car.

Note to self - bitch at shop that did oil change two weeks ago and apparently did not check all fluid levels...

You probably won't find Dexron II. It was superseeded by III some years back.

Exactly what I found... so you wind up using the wrong fluid number according to the manual - and it is labeled ATF with no mention of power steering. I knew it was the right stuff, but I did hesitate a bit.

Problem completely solved by additional fluid. Sorting through my records I don't think the fluid had been changed or topped off in at least 20k.

Be assured that ATF and powersteering fluid are the same thing. Both are hydraulic fluids of the same viscosity. ATF is typically dyed red to help identify it from other fluids that can end up on your garage floor.

I am using Redline ATF in mine. Works great! I rigged up some plumbing to pump all the old out while replacing it with new. The steering felt much better and lighter after changing the fluid.
