Hi all,

 

Trying to remove the power steering pump and can't do it as sleeve at the front just won't come off. I understand it should slide off in order to remove the pump from the brackets? The one at the back came off easily, but the front one won't budge. Until it is removed the bolt which is attached to the body of the pump can't clear the mount. It is a sleeve marked No.13 in the Porsche EPC.  I also attach a photo with a red arrow pointing to the sleeve. How do you remove that bloody sleeve? I don't have a lift, so access is terrible. Thanks in advance for any advice.

You can try a small drive-pin and hammer, it has to move foreward to come out.

I recently dismounted the one on my car, and it wasn't dificult to get it out with a drive-pin (or maybe a screwdriver) and hammer.

Thanks, J.Elenbaas. I tried with a drive-pin and a hammer, but it didn't move. OK, need to figure out how to find better access or more space to swing the hammer. Did you use any penetrating oil or anything or just hit the sleeve on its edge and it came off?

I didn't use any penetrating oil, just light hammering was enough on my car.

 

When i look at your picture it looks like something is wrong (might be ilusion!!!).

It looks like the gap in where the sleeve sits is wider on one side then on the other side.

The sleeve is cylindrical and not conical, and the gap in where the sleeve sits should be even.

 

There is a possibilty that the pump has been removed before, and maybe a slightly larger sleeve has been used.

Explaining the uneven gap and the reason that it wouldn't come out easy.

Use heat. Wrap anything that might be damaged in a couple sheets of aluminum foil, then hit it with a propane torch with a pencil flame.


Use caution and good judgement but then hit it with a punch/chisel/screwdriver and a big maul while its hot.


If it doesnt come off after a few rounds, or if you cant get access/leverage, my next step would be to take it somewhere that has a lift.

Thanks all. Heated the sleeve and then managed to insert snap ring (expanding) pliers into the space between the sleeve and the nut on the pump body and pushed the bloody sleeve out. Did not come out easily but finally gave up and popped out! Have no idea why it was seated so tight. Probably because the car is 25 years old . Now just need to change pump gaskets and put everything back together.
