Bar's Power Steering Leak
#1

Hey guys,

I have had a small leak from around the power steering reservoir for a few years.  I know it's common and it's possible to replace the hose and attachments.  I was wondering if this would be okay to give a try.  I know if you put PS fluid instead of the Dexron 3 it can mess up the whole system.  I just wanted to make sure it trying this wouldn't make things any worse.  Reviews seem to indicate it's safe for all kinds of systems, but I'm sure you guys could confirm this wouldn't be harmful.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I think your reading to much, PS fluid is almost the same as Dexron, and mixing them will not be an issue

Draining it all out replacing the tank and the fluid would be a better idea, the tank is the same as BMW of the same era, Meyle make a replacement thats only a few dollars

The tank has a filter in the bottom you cant clean,

And the replacement reservoir is $15-$30. It was the hoses leaking on mine, not the reservoir. The cheese ball screw-type hose clamps cut into the hose. Going to replace them with good, solid, SS Norma clamps.

PS: I would NOT put corn starch, or whatever that crap is, in my PS or cooling system. Fix the leak.

As an addendum to my above post: after a bunch of reading I’m pretty sure my problem stemmed from using Royal Purple synthetic power steering fluid instead of Dex III. It caused the hoses by the reservoir to soften and swell, exacerbating the hose clamps cutting into them and leaking.
