More Power Steering Woes.
#1

Must be something in the air. I got the Cab out today to put the top up and remove the battery for the winter and while doing my fluid check my PS fluid was way low. Noticed both hoses were damp as was the bulkhead below the reservoir.

I'm guessing 28 year old hoses. The res-pump is easy and cheap, the cooler-res not so much. I'm looking at two options: a) dremeling off the crimp connector and replacing it with a hose/clamp or b ) removingthe cooler and taking it out to Eric's and have them crimp me a new hydraulic line on it.

I can't seem to find any info on removing the cooler. Anyone ever done this? Too much work for what could easily be a <$10 fix.

Lastly, what are the odds my reservoir is leaking? Doesn't seem like there's any stress on it to crack it or something. Visually, it looked fine when I pulled it out, and I plan to fill it and see what happens, but I'm suspicious that both the hoses were wet to the top. Inspected them pretty closely when I got them off and there was no visible cracking. While stiff, they were far from brittle.

Anyway, anyone have any input to share?

You are talking about the hoses on the tank, that is a real common place to have a leak

If you still have the half clear half black tank, they leak at the joint between the colours

The hoses leaking, you need to get them off, and cut about 25mm off the pipes and refit with new clips, I would change out the tank while your there, they have a filter in you cant clean, and a new BMW tank from Meyle is about $25

The cooler to remove is a real pain, you will need to remove the front bumper and all associated parts, then the engine oil cooler, then fiddle out the PAS cooler

Yeah, I've pretty much decided just to dremel off the old rubber bit and replace with a length of hose and two clamps.

Good news on the Res. I'm disappointed clear-top ones are NLA but that's probably why. I'd try to run a bead of super adhesive around the joint, but the filter needs replacing.

I tried the old trick of cutting off an inch if hose and reattaching. No go. The old hose, while not yet brittle, is too hardened to slip over the barbs on the reservoir.

Looking at Pelican, new res and Res-Pump hose will be ~$50, new Cooler-Res will be abt $1.25. (I already have a stash of Norma hose clamps)

Cooler to tank is low pressure side so you can use hose clamps, the high pressure side is 120 Bar or 1700 Psi, no hose clips on there

Right. I messed with my reservoir a bit today and it doesn't seem to be leaking at all. I'll know more when I can play with it a bit.

Now that I've done the work, I understand why this wouldn't work: both hoses have flared ends. The supply hose is 5/8" at the reservoir and 1/2 at the pump and the return hose is 3/8" at the crimped end on the cooler tube and 1/2" at the reservoir. You cut those flares off and there's no way to get the hose over the nipples.

The good news is that the supply hose is only $20 and the bits to make a return hose were <$10.

Attn: Mods. I had forgotten I started a thread about this last year. Feel free to merge with my other PS thread if such a thing is possible.

BTW, when the Gates guy emailed me re: black "racing belts" I replied with a question about the cost and minimum order requirements to have a custom replacement return hose-end made with a 3/8" hose with a 1/2 flare 2" from a 90° bend to facilitate a repair like I just made (and to avoid using plumbing hardware and two different size hoses) I imagine it would be thousands of dollars and hundreds of hoses, but I have no idea how those proprietary hoses are made. If it turns out to be close to affordable, I might pull the trigger and have some made. Or if they already make one that could be trimmed to fit, even better.

Stay tuned.

I probably should say Im cautiously optimistic but in reality Im positively giddy at the response I got from Gates today. Two avenues to pursue and Im waiting on a response to further clarification of what I need today.

Im guessing this could be a $10-$15 alternative to replacing the entire return/cooling line.

Count me in to buy a couple as I have a few 968's in the family with higher mileage and waiting to hear your info.

Cool.  I’m starting to buy various things for the car which are replacements for NLA parts ( particularly those known to be weak points and prone to failure ) .  And if they sit on a garage shelf for twenty years, so be it .. I’d rather have the peace of mind that comes with having a spare part readily available than waiting for who knows how long to get something from Germany,  and that’s if it’s even available !   There was a post here somewhere about one part which took more than three months to source .. I don’t have that kind of patience .

Well. Back to square one. Or maybe two. Just got this back from Gates:

No thats not an aftermarket product dont know how one would source that product

So, Gates makes a 3/8 hose with a 1/2 extended end on it, but no idea where a bend is, if there is one, or where to get one. Ideally, one would get access to an industrial warehouse and go through the bins until you found it.

Until then, I guess its the $300 OEM line or $10 worth of 1/2-3/8 hose and a 3/8-1/2 90° elbow.

FWIW, pretty much ANY 3/8 hose with a 1/2 end would do. You can put a pretty tight radius in a 3/8 hose. Plenty of room under a reservoir to do it.

I have been replacing hoses from the powersteering , not on my 968 but a 944 s2 and a Turbo .

Went to a shop wich repair and replace  hydraulic hoses for all sorts of machines , mostly tractor and agricultar machinery , they made perfect replacements , been a while when i had them done , but it worked perfect .

Original replacemt would be my first choice , but it can be fixed .differently when needed .

I have a place, but the issue is the hours of disassembly to get the return hose/cooler coil out of the front fender.
