change steering wheel?
#1

My steering wheel on the '92 is shot it has the thread coming off the wheel plus the color of the leather is worn off. I have a chance to buy a new steering wheel in the right color but it is a sport wheel I think. It looks like a MOMO but it is a Genuine Porsche wheel BUT my question is has any one changed steering wheels like this and what is the feelings about loosing the air bag? Is it much more dangerous to drive with out the air bag? any info appreciated.

tough question to answer. our airbags are type 1. they are not rated to last this long. they may or may not work. also, type 1 bags were known to cause injury. i cannot suggest that anyone remove the airbag, or that it is a good idea, but many do it.

that being said, i swapped out my wheel for a club sport replica years ago, and never looked back.

Yep, first gen airbags make a big, much more violent bang than modern ones.

I've done this several times now in favor of Club Sport / 930S steering wheels. I can put a DIY together over the weekend. Anytime your working with the airbags disconnect the battery for a minimum of 30 minutes before working on them. If you reconnect the battery without the airbag connected or a resistor inserted the WARNING and AIR BAG lights will be triggered and will have to be cleared by a diagnostic tool.

Does anyone have an "Airbag Switch" in the center console of their 968? My 968 has a small toggle switch in the center console (under the hinged lid), but I think it was installed by a previous owner. It does not look OEM. Only problem is that I have NO idea which way is "on" or "off"...

986 Boxster Thanks for the info yes it is a Club/Sport/930 steering wheel I am buying is it very complicated to remove old one and install this wheel? I think the hardest part is making sure the turn signals and horn continue to work- or do u lose the horn? Once the air bag wheel is removed the air bag light can't come on can it?

Boy is this disappointing I called Suncoast to order my steering wheel and the woman said it is only for a 928GT not a 968?? I saw this steering wheel online and it was in magenta which is what I want. She said she will check with some one tomorrow and see if it will fit my car. I know you guys have the sports wheel in some of your 968's did you have trouble finding ones that fir 968" This one says genuine Porsche Sport steering wheel. I will call Sunset parts tomorrow. What a bummer this is, some times I feel like giving up as I cannot get the parts I want to restore this car.

Hot968: have you considered to have your original steering wheel upholstered with new leather? I had my shifter done a few years ago, it looks brand new.

No switch like that in my car, that's for sure. Maybe the PO installed it to disable the airbag on the passenger side? If you want to put a child seat there, it is mandatory (at least it is over here).

,

The 930S wheel was available on the European only 968 club sport. Sunset should be able to get it for you. As far as the safety aspect that's a decision you have to make. Personally I'm with Flash and have never looked back. It's a relatively easy swap as long as you follow the instructions to the letter.

hot968, you need Porsche Part # 928-652-104-00 (Horn Contact). If you simply unplug the air bag and don't do any modifications the ari bag / warning light will go off ad soon as the battery is reconnected. The cleanest mod is to insert a 3.0 ohm resistor into the orange plug the the clock spring was plugged into.

Heres a quick run down:

1) Disconnect battery for at least half an hour

2) Remove the two T30 screws holding on the air bag

3) Gently pull on the air bag and it will come forward and carefully unplug the red connector on the back; I always tape over the plug with electic tape when storing air bags

4) Undo the the 24mm bolt holding the wheel on

5) Pull wheel off

6) Remove the two philips screws holding the clockspring on and trace the wiring under the dash this can be easily unpluged

7) Where you unpluged the clock spring from the orange connector is where the 3.0 ohm resistor goes

8) Insert the horn contact part #928-652-104-00

9) Install new wheel (I slide the washer over a screwdriver to help guide it onto the hub

10) Torque 24mm bolt to 34 Ft-Lb

11) Reconnect power and enjoy!

I'll still put together a DIY with pictures over the weekend.

I have a Raid Silberpfeil 340mm wheel (from Carnewal) that I need to install sometime...and a 964 adptor that I've been told is a direct fit no modifing required...also bought the 12mm spacer to bring it out a little more (6'4") so more knee room is a good thing. Thinking of removing the passenger side at the same time - figuring after 20 years it would cause more harm than good - but need to figure out the resister to keep airbag light off....

Wow, EEZATOY, that is a great looking wheel! I'll need to swing by once you get it installed to take a look. I think we are neighbors, as I read you mentioning Hollywood Hardware. I live 2 miles from there, in the Little Pocket.

Ryker,

Yes we are close as I'm about 3 blocks from sprouts - now I really need to look into the passenger airbag delete since I would like to do it all at one time...At that time I will start a new thread to document it...

986boxster, thanks so much your write up is great. A DIY with photos would be so helpful to. I did not have any luck ordering my wheel even though 968 when I went to order it is only for a 928?? I got an email from Suncoast can only get grey for 990.00 and Sunset they can get black only but a much better price 506.00. I am still trying different sites and AutoAtlanta says they have one in magenta but they want 1230.72 plus That is just so high a price. I am still hopeful to find one but getting discouraged. The part # is G928347084084 XW I think that is what I need

Well I picked up my 92 yesterday and what a beautiful up date it is to have the new steering wheel, shift nob, and radio installed. I have to tell u guys and gals about the person at Sunset Porsche in Oregon that helped me find my steering wheel in the right color I had given up on finding one. When I called to inquire Andraya Hayward answered and looked for my steering wheel but came up with only black available( which I knew). Then a week later I got a great email that she had found my wheel brand new and it was available. I ordered it with out hesitation. These folks at Sunset really are a terrific bunch to go the extra mile and tire and help a customer and their prices are very fair. Next I went to my repair shop, German Auto Repair, Elms Place, Amityville NY to have it installed. This is a excellent repair shop and they really know their stuff with all German cars. It is run by Kenny and his wife Susan, these people put the time in to help repair any thing you may need. I highly recommend them for any repair even if your Porsche isn't runny they will arrange towing for you. If you like the leather couches and fancy coffee tables then this shop isn't for you but if you want a mechanic that is dedicated to repairing your car this is the place to go. If I could figure out how to upload pictures I would post them of the before and after interior, maybe I can figure it out this weekend!

I'm finally planning to replace my stock steering wheel with a proper racing wheel (Momo, Sparco, or OMP - haven't decided. I'm planning a trip to Winding Road Racing this coming Saturday to pick one out), and this post does a nice job of explaining how to do it. Just a quick question to anyone who has done this: This post is the first one I've seen describe the need for that Porsche horn contact. Is it really necessary? No problem if it is, just want to confirm, since I haven't seen this brought up in any of the other write-ups on how to replace the wheel with a non-airbag unit. Thanks.

I talked to Jason at Paragon Products this morning, and he told me that according to his data, Part # 928-652-104-00 is a stock 968 item, which is confusing, because all 968's came with air bags. So unless someone has some input on this, I think I'm going to have to buy the new wheel, adapter, and quick release, take the old wheel off, and try to figure out what kind of horn connector I need once I get everything apart. I'll take pictures and post something that clarifies this.

Can't advise on the connector I'm afraid, other than to say that they didn't come with airbags everywhere, which is probably why it's shown as a stock part. Club Sports/Sports (not sold in the US) for example had a non-airbag steering wheel as standard and I've seen pictures of very early cars with the 4-spoke, non-airbag wheel (from the 944) as well.
