Any Interest in a Bay Area One-Day Fun Run?
#1

Being as we seem to have a few members who either live in the Bay Area, near the Bay Area, or regularly visit the Bay Area, I was wondering about the level of of interest in organizing a one-day Bay Area Fun Run.   There are some really sweet back roads with minimal traffic I regularly visit and I suspect others have their cool little secret roads too.   We could meet in the morning, and enjoy a day of spirited driving with stops for lunch and dinner.   I suspect a one day drive with a few cars would be easy to organize - certainly easier than a weekend event with hotels, winery tours, etc.  We could put something together with minimal effort when it gets a little warmer.  Thoughts?

Hi Bill,

Great idea, of course it would all depend on the date and the condition of the road at Donner, but it sounds like a great idea. There are a couple of 968 groups on Facebook that should be included when you get a date nailed down.

Hope you and Tina are well,

Yes, let's do it Bill.

Hwy 1 is pretty nice with a stop in Half Moon Bay or Pacifica depending if you drive north or south? Not so great for Matt? But, maybe farther up the coast to include Kaj? Gold Country, Auburn, Sonora, etc?

The only question for me/us personally is when?...spending more than half our time away from San Francisco. And, the 968 is in Sparks...which means the same considerations about driving over the Sierras if there is snow.

I think if we start thinking about Highway 1, Gold Country, Sonora, etc., we are slipping into a weekend West Coast Gathering type situation.  I certainly loved and miss those, but I'm not sure if there is enough interest these days and I don't have the time to organize such an event.  Of course if someone else takes this on, I will be there.

What I have in mind is more of a local thing.  No hotels, no winery tours.   Perhaps cruise some cool roads in the East Bay, have lunch, and then cruise up to Marin for some cool North Bay roads, followed by dinner, or vice versa.  I'd be willing to scout out and suggest the East Bay portion.  Perhaps Kaj can scope out the North Bay?

OK. So just pick a date and location & we will be there, depending on the weather & if our current schedule doesn't conflict...

We're available:

3/17 to 4/1

4/10 to ??

I'm thinking maybe May or June to insure we have some comfortable dry weather.  At least warm enough to lower the top.   (Of course that's not a consideration if my lovely wife comes along for the ride.  I think in all the years I've owned this car, she has spent a total of 20 minutes in the car with the top down.  It's all about her hair, or so she tells me).

After all this years you you never suggested a cap? Or did you keep the top down to keep her out?

I've suggested hats, caps and scarves.   She says they make her ears look big (they don’t).  The top stays up.  No arguing with Senior Management!

May or June sounds good...looking forward to it.

Tell Tina you can get a wind deflector/ diffuser. They're a little pricey, but maybe someone has a used one? (That's how we got ours) https://dr911.ca/shop/porsche-944-968-ca...004420250/

It does make a significant difference.

I have one.   It does indeed work quite well.  When I’m alone.   (It is admittedly a little bit of a hassle to install and remove).   If Tina is in the car, the top is up.  No discussion.   I never meant to imply there is any logic involved.

hehehehe

Why don’t you suggest her ears look cold and get a winter cap with the ear flaps. Red plaid might do it. Senior management does rule the roost. I suspect we all know that!

O.K., let's try and nail this down so it actually happens.  Looking at the calendar, most of the weekends in May are holiday weekends: Cinco de Mayo, Mothers' Day, and Memorial Day, with the attendant holiday traffic.    So I'm thinking we should look at weekends in June.  The options are:

June 1 or 2; 8 or 9;  22 or 23.

I'm available all of the above dates.  Chime in on availability.  We can pick the date that the most people can make.  Also, post your opinions on whether we should keep this limited to this forum, to only 968s, or extend invitations to others, including the 924 and 944 folks?

Available on 6/1 or 6/2 & 6/8 or 6/9 (we have a 914 event 6/22 & 6/23).

Since there were so few 968s imported to North America and every year we lose some more, letting other P-cars join seems like a good idea.

I work weekends at a Sonoma Co. winery, so I'll be unable to participate.

I guess I’ve been assuming weekends would be best, but there’s no reason it couldn’t happen on a weekday.  I know I can free up most weekdays with some advance notice.    It would be nice to have Chris along for the ride.   Anyone else have a problem with picking a weekday?

I have a bike ride on 6/1 and a show on 6/8. Other than that, the rest of the month is open, as is July.

I'm interested in joining the drive.  I've not participated in any in the past.  It would be nice to meet other 968 owners.  I have a 92 Midnight Blue Cab and live in Berkeley.

Hi Bob!  Thanks for reviving this thread.  I was about to do so myself.   With winter hanging around quite late this year.   I’m thinking some time in late June or July.    Are people good with weekdays, or would weekends be best?

So who is interested and what are your preferable dates?

Hi Bob, we're in San Francisco and just brought the 968 over from Reno/Sparks...it's a '94 midnight blue Cabriolet.

Hi Bill, we're available in June/July except for 6/18 to 6/25 & 7/1 to 7/8. So, 6/26 to 6/30 & after 7/8 works for us.
