6th Annual Ortega Highway Fun Run and BBQ
#1

Summer is here, and it's time to start thinking about driving that car the way it was meant to be driven. Yes, it's time again for the annual Ortega Highway Fun Run and BBQ!!! This is a full featured event, enjoyed by many over the years, and it's FREE!

Saturday August 18.

Once again we will do the Ortega Highway Run. This run is always a blast, and with the now repaired and paved roads, it is even more fun. The scenery is amazing, and the roads are twisty. What more could you ask for?

I HIGHLY recommend having a radar detector for this. We tend to move along at a brisk pace, and so you need to be on the lookout for the local constabulary. Co-Pilots are more than welcome, and highly encouraged. This is an open event. Wives and significant others are welcome too.

We will again start at the Coffee and Cars very early. If you haven't done this, it is a MUST SEE. I will arrange for special group parking for our group. Arrive by 6:30 if you want to park with us. Once we all get parked, feel free to wander around and see some of the most amazing cars you will ever see in one place at one time. Bring your camera.

We will then have a brief driver's meeting at our area at 8:15, where I will hand out directions, maps, and all that stuff.

We will be departing there at 8:30 sharp for the run.

As always, there will be something special to amuse us along the way. Co-pilots make this a whole lot easier, so bring somebody along.

The course will likely be similar to the last 2 years. We will again stop at Starbuck's in Corona at the half way point and gather together, pick up stragglers, grab a drink, and then head on again. There are no other stops planned.

The entire run takes about 3 hours. We should be back at my house about 11:30 or so where we will all go back and I will burn some dead animal flesh for everybody, hang out in the new outdoor living room and barbeque bar, and open the well stocked fridge in the Garage Mahal. I may even break out the Margarator!

It's generally quite warm, so dress accordingly. For you cab drivers, I recommend a hat and water be in the car with you. Sunblock isn't a bad idea either. This is definitely a run that is AC friendly.

Everything for the barbecue is provided. All I need is a head count.

For those who might be coming from a distance, I can put a few people up here. Contact me for details.

Yeah it is a bit of a hike to get up there from our area, tho BVA would dig it.

Heat and AC repair is on the back burner til I get my cam timing issue sorted out. Then I'll be in Monterey for car week in mid-August. That usually empties my wallet real good!

I think for this year's run I'll pop my sunroof out and wear a hat!

Say what ? Quake ? I'm in L.A but not even the slightest tremor felt here..of course 4.0 is in the negligible category and unless you're sitting in a lawn chair , right on top of the epicenter, with a martini filled to the rim where you might see a ripple in the drink , heck, it's just another day in Ca. There's more shaking from the foot stomping by the four or five people who showed up downtown for the Stanley Cup, Kings parade.. This is not a hockey town, that's for sure.

I need to look at that weekend. The one before is no good. But as BVA said, don't schedule around me!

Possible. Even more possible if the weather gods decide to move a cold front in that weekend.

Cold front would be great - my car feels so much faster when the air temp drops below 60!

No coincidence that every car manufacturer tests their " to be published " 0 to 60 and q -mile times around 5 am in the morning during winter months. Yeah, below 60 would be perfect but in August we'd have to seek some Ortega highway in Alaska ! If the temps are in the low 70s I would not mind driving down for the run, although I realize that's highly improbable .

I'm in. Late August weekends are clear, so if we keep the date or move it slightly I'm good.

Too close to harvest for me. We should beginning seeing fruit the last week in August and we have to get our stemmer/crusher, press, and pumps ready. The Monterey historics will about the last car thing I'll do before harvest starts.

After having a blast last year and having Bob graciously allow me to stay at his house I find this year I am jammed up with work stuff that I am unable to reschedule. For those of you that read about this event it is well worth going to for good driving, fun times and meeting those you either read about or chat to. Sorry I'm going to miss it this year.

Wow. Seems like we just did this. Is it really 1-year later already? My mind is going gents.

I'm in as usual. Love the run. 25th may not work for me but its a bit too early to tell. I'll keep an eye out for the date fiddling.

Here's a radical thought.. Move the timeline to early November ? Much cooler temps, less traffic, no start of school year conflicts for those with kids, and also a month ahead of any significant holidays..

Flash - not the weekend earlier - that's Monterey car week!

I wouldn't mind shifting this to a cooler time of year either... AFTER this one tho!
