West coast gathering 2016! 7/8-7/10
#21

Sounds ideal!  I miss Paso and the sight of 15-20 of our cars parked side to side.  And, if it's in  SLT, my wife will not only allow me to attend, but will enthusiastically join me as she grew up in the area.

lol - i won't be renting anything.  i'll have the Targa GTS by then, and so that i don't get creamed by those who would otherwise shun me, i suppose i'll have to be giving a lot of rides (a select few might even get to drive it)

what would be cool is that the still undetermined new owner of my blue car brought it to the gathering

Flash, sign me up for a ride! There was a GTS at Rennsport and it was a pretty fine looking drive!  In fact, you could bring both cars, the Targa GTS and your homegrown 968 GTS.

I suspect a number of us will be able to talk our spouses into coming to a "car guys" event in SLT. My wife is already committed to an 11 hr drive. This would also be the motivation I need to finish all the little projects I've been noodling over for years.....

Has anyone looked into the rental cost of a super car ? Last I checked , strictly out of curiosity , at the Budget in Beverly Hills where they had a variety of Ferraris , Lamborghinis, Bentleys, turbo Porsche's, etc , the rate plus the compulsory fees ( per mile charge, and especially the separate insurance you HAD TO buy from them, as proof of your own insurance was not acceptable ) the price was fairly staggering . I can only imagine what a 918 or a Aventador J or McLaren P 1 or a Veyron might cost you for a couple of days..probably cheaper to buy a 968 locally just to drive it for the gathering. Lol.

You know, I know someone selling a blue 968 cab on the west coast.  It's suipposed to be pretty nice but he probably wants more than the 918 rental price

Being totally without knowledge of South Lake Tahoe, I did a google map and found out it is about a 11 hour drive (based on no traffic)  from Portland Or to Lake Tahoe, which might mean staying at some motel on the way if there is traffic which I am sure there will be. But having organized other events, I find that you get more attendees if hotels are cheaper, as well a places to eat. Not everyone has deep pockets or do not want to spend $250 or more at a hotel. Perhaps South Lake Tahoe may not be the best place. And the idea of spending lots of time in a Casino, is great if you win but if you loose then it becomes a very expensive weekend.

Hopefully no one will find time to spend in a casino, we'll be out on the twisties or bench racing in the bar. We're lookinig for an affordable rate cause $250 is too much for this, looks like 968 Park has rooms at half that and we may be able to get a better rate for a group - tbd. SLT has lots of typically priced places to eat.  I was looking for someplace somewhat reachable for a lot of people (11.5 hrs for me too, have done it in one day before), someplace spouses would enjoy hanging out if they didn't want to go for drives, decent weather for summer time (not near 100). That's sort of why I thought of SLT.  I'm open to other suggestions for locations, nothing cast in concrete yet.

With the 968 you could make it in 9 hours tops. Even with a cab :-p

i'm a snob.  i won't stay at anyplace with less than 4 stars.  really pisses me off when they don't have 24hr room service too.  a bar in the hotel, or no less than 30 yards from the front door is a must.

price is no object for hotels.  i've spent way too many nights in cheap hotels, and regretted it.  it really ruins a trip.  most people don't get to get away often.  cheaping out is not a good idea.  treat yourself well when you are on a fun trip.

in popular areas, typically i find you can get some thing decent for 400-500 a night, but less than that is a real gamble.  out in the sticks, obviously the rates go way down.  we did pretty well in the 200 range in paso.

West Coast is vast expanse land.. finding the perfect location is going to be tough. you aren't going to make it a short drive for everyone.

Portland is 15 hr SoCal people,  longer for anybody in AZ or NV that may want to attend... no matter where you pick, it's gonna be a fairly lengthy drive for the majority of attendees ( Tahoe is 8.5 hours for me)

OR make it Disneyland.. only 20 minutes for me Wink

Look at www.jdvhotels.com/968parkhotel

Plus SLT has a wide range of hotels to suit most pocketbooks if one doesn't like this place. I kind of like the sauna.1

Screw Flash, 5 star or forgettaboutit! Actually I hope this doesn't become a divisive issue. One thing I've learned from my track days is that unless you're in Watkins Glen, it's pretty easy to find decent well priced lodging that offers clean rooms and sheets with internet connectivity. Other than the ability to reserve a conference room for the scotch tasting, this shouldn't be too difficult. Remember you're only sleeping in the room, not living or hanfging out in it!
