West Coast Gathering 2018
#1

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF OUR 968 FRIENDS!!.

2018 is here and the West Coast team are now in the mood to plan our Gathering for 2018. We start early because good planning is the road to success. Our initial plan is focused on the Eldorado Foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Why?.....It is more centered to both the North and the South. The small town of Sonora would be our base. Fun outings, like the Moaning Caverns and maybe a winery visit as well. Beautiful lakes and great 968 roads are everywhere.

Lets us know folks what you think......and what days this summer/fall seems to work best for you. Any 968 from anywhere in the Country (World) is welcome.

Feedback's greatly appreciated.

Be careful who you invite, you never know what some smart-ass will drive up in...or, 2 smart-asses. (Paso Robles 2011).

Yeah, I know. We will have our six-shooters loaded and ready for intruders. It is still the "Wild West" right?

Our trip could include a visit to the Moaning Caverns and a lunch stop at the old gold town and historic park of Colombia. Tons of fun places here.

Auchhh...a Mercedes........and not one, but two of them. They are like, you know what holes, everyone has one. Not a head turner...on the other hand  10 968's driven down the road would definitely turn heads and very few has one.

Our timing schedule would remain the same. Arriving Friday afternoon/evening...check in...8PM (20:00) gathering....bring good wine and relax. Presentation of Sat/Sun schedule....stay until Monday or leave Sun night. All done successfully in the past due to our expert coordinator Bob Frith (Az968).

From our 2017 gathering in Mendocino.

Yeah, guys. It's time to start putting together a plan for a summer meet-up!  Kaj and i have talked about the area around Sonora, CA as a place.  I earlier thought the Rennsport Reunion might be an option, but, lordy, lordy, have the room rates become unobtainium, both in price and availability. So let's just go back to the old formula, a neat place to drive and socialize.  This spot has some advantages of the Sierra Nevadas, not obscenely far from AZ, NV, OR, Socal,   Need to do some more research and planning. Also open to other suggestions. But no place where the heat will melt my tires, had enough of that living in Phoenix.

Yep, time for some early inputs. As you all know it takes months to plan such an event.......does the week after Labor day look good?

The week after Labor Day? We've been doing these in June. Sonora sounds nice, but it could get hot then. Any reason for pushing it back to September this year?

The weekend after Labor Day was in my mind as well. Could even be two weeks after Labor Day. Yes. it will be warm, however we are at a higher elevation. We should be able to secure better hotel deals after Labor Day as well.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please try to attend this wonderful event, even if the Silver Cabriolet you bring is not the one you usually drive Wink

At least they were not all following one of those other silver cabs like the last Paso run.

The Rennsport Reunion is going on this year in September, so to close to that might be an issue, it's the 27th-30th this year. Maybe a separate gathering of 968's for Rennsport the number of 968's there last time was a little light.

Sadly, I would be back in the classroom at that point in the summer, and would be unlikely to be able to attend. It depends on my teaching schedule, but I suspect I would miss some or all of the event.

It would be a real shame to not have Matt and his wife there. How hot does Sonora get in the summer?

Usually averaging in the high 80's. And September is usually our warmest month of the year. What's wrong with late June or early July, as we have done the past two years?

And, if we wait until after Labor Day, what do we do about our brethren in white 968s?

I'm in favor of a june/July time since I have a white 968 and can't take it to formal events after Labor day. Plus, the academically-committed among us would have scheduling issues. However, any place that regularly sees temperature with 3 digits should be avoided. While my car has a wonderful a/c system, my body doesn't. Big metro areas are out, how can one have fun sitting in traffic?

Very sadly coastal CA north of LA was devistated this year so we should avoid that.

Sonora, that Kaj suggested, has June high temp that ave 85, which is perfect.

Plus the Sierra Nevada mountains are right there, with mountain roads.

Rennsport has sucked up all the rooms near Monterey that time of year. But, maybe another time of the summer wouldn't be so bad.

I think we should focus on those two areas and see what we can find.

Anyone that live near either have any thoughts?
