Between Sonora/Gold Country vs. Monterrey/Central Coast, I'd prefer the former.  Not only is it more centrally located for our friends coming from the East, but I also think we will find more interesting roads and scenery, along with lower prices.   We should decide soon, especially if we are looking at June/July as we need to book a hotel well in advance to get enough rooms and a decent discount.  And June/July allows white cars!

Dan, it works the other way around, white cars sunburn more easily and become red. That's why mine lives in the shady garage and uses lots of sunblock :-)

OK, let's start to focus on June and the Eldorado Hills. I think mid or early June?

Rap, you can come join us west coasters any time, we're not biased against east coasters :-) Just drive out or fly and at least rent an appropriate car. We'll be near Yosemite Park this year, spectacular scenery and roads.

Mooks, dats a mighty big word dat casts a wide net. Think of all those poor D's in DC you just threw  under the bus. Thank you!  oaz I have done it a couple of times and had a blast. I actually rented a Porsche unlike some others who live with their shame. Unfortunately this is smack dab in the middle of my driving season. Previous trips were pre track. My life is about to get upended so I'm watching to see how that pans out. It is something we would like to do again!

I'd prefer the weekend of the 9th or the 16th, rather than the 2nd which would make it back to back with Memorial Day Weekend. Also, we might want to consider that June 17th is Father's Day and some may have other plans, though it would be o.k. with me..

We had a valid suggestion from Steve to look at Big Sur. He thought that the The Sierra Foothills would be too hot in June. I have been up there in June many times, and yes, it's warm. Keep in mind that Sonora is at a higher elevation. I have never seen temps over 90 though, usually in the 85 range. Big Sur is a beautiful area to visit, my only concern would be fog in the summer and I am not sure how many back roads are available for fun drives. It is also very congested in the summer but so is everywhere else.... We shall keep the doors open for now but we need to nail down a plan soon.

Focusing on June 2-9-16

I believe Highway 1 is still closed south of Big Sur and isn't scheduled to re-open until this fall, so there is no easy way to get there from the south. And there aren't many fun roads other than maybe Naciamento/Jolon through the army base. As I recall, (it's been MANY years since I've been on those roads), they can get so narrow and curvy that you have to drive very slowly, amd I expect they are more crowded as they ar the only way in from the south.

Bill makes some good points, especially about the roads and the traffic around Big Sur.

Willamette Valley south of Salem is also a beautiful area, lots of roads and wine, but a longer trek for the Arizona and bay area folks.

We are still focused on Sonora and a now looking at 6/29-7/2. Sonora Inn has some good group rates, is centrally located with parking. Optional stay across the street at Roadway Inn. Little lower price as well.Check your calendar and let us know if dates are good.

In order to get the best rates and number of rooms reserved we probably should commit our self pretty soon.

There are also a couple of lodges in the mountains up highway 108, 20-25 minutes from Sonora, that would be cooler. Certainly would have more fun roads to drive, I'm not good sitting in traffic as you know. We'll check availability and rates at them as well as an Inn Kaj has identified and report back.
