Weird Cruise control problem
#1

Ok, I'm having the weirdest problem with my cruise control:

First, some history - Ever since I've had the car, occasionally (just occasionally) when I use the cruise control, it would act weird. The car would be running along ok, and then the cruise would just accelerate up a bunch, like for about 2 seconds, then coast back below the cruise level, then accelerate again, etc, instead of just holding a steady speed. (Normally, the cruise worked just fine. It would hold a steady speed and not have any problems. Just occasionally it would do this.)

About a month ago, it regressed even more. Now its completely unusable. Whenever you turn it on, it starts freaking out. The pedal physically starts bouncing up and down, the car starts jerking all over the place, and you steadily lose speed. The gas pedal is literally flopping up and down, making all kinds of noise as it smacks against the floorboard.

Any thoughts on WHAT this could possibly be? I just ordered a new DME Relay (not installed yet) so I'm hoping that fixes the problem, as I have no idea what could cause this. Is there some kind of cruise control computer that could be hosed up? Could the cabling or connection down by the pedals be messed up?

There are two components on the cruise control that are prone to common failure -- both of them might have gone wrong in your case. I've had both problems you describe on my 944 (at different times)

The dancing gas pedal problem I had was solved by replacing the cruise control servo (under hood, front of the battery, you'll see a throttle cable running to it).

A more common problem -- especially when associated with inability to maintain speed (cruise cutting out, or cruise wanting to go WOT all the time, or cuising at 5/10 mph above set speed) is usually a faulty cruise control computer. You can try replacing it -- or another solution is to take out the electrical board and resolder the connection with a soldering iron. I've never had much luck with the resoldering exercise, but others have taken it to a TV repair shop and success. The cruise control computer is a silver box under the dash on the driver side, outward from the steering column. It requires that you be a contortist to remove it.
